Milan is ten out of ten for a dog, minus the weather. Dogs go everywhere here, inside cafés, bars and boutiques as well as out, and we never once had a problem getting around with Daisy. She was welcome inside the Aperol bar on the square facing the Duomo and in every small shop we went into. The centre is flat and compact: the Duomo, the Galleria, Brera and the Castle are all within twenty minutes on foot, and the Navigli canals give you a long towpath walk when the streets get too busy. Eighteen hotels on our Milan list take dogs, and Daisy stayed at one of them herself, Hotel Dei Cavalieri Milano Duomo.
What earns it the place is where the dog is allowed to be. Daisy was treated as a guest from the door: a bed and bowls were waiting in the room, and she went to the restaurant, the bar and the breakfast room rather than being left upstairs. The hotel asks that you confirm the dining areas with staff at check-in, so do that, but the answer she got was yes. The rooftop bar on the tenth floor looks straight at the Duomo. The spa isn't listed either way, and neither is leaving the dog alone in the room, so ask before you plan a dinner out without her.
That makes Dei Cavalieri the best dining-access hotel in the city, because the rest of Milan's hotels rarely say where a dog can go once it's inside. Park Hyatt is the clearest, and it's a no: dogs aren't in Pellico 3, La Cupola, Mio Lab or the spa, so breakfast is in the room. Bvlgari has the fullest kit in town, the Pet Club with a bed, blanket, bowls, a tent, toys, a carrier and a brush, plus pet-sitting and a 4,000 square metre garden, though whether the dog can use the garden isn't published. Armani, Mandarin Oriental, the Four Seasons and Grand Hotel et de Milan all take dogs free and say nothing about the restaurant or bar, so ask.
Dei Cavalieri's fee is EUR 25 per dog per night. The catch is size: it takes small dogs only and doesn't publish the weight cap, and it doesn't say how many dogs it will take. That's the Milan pattern. Palazzo Parigi caps at 5 kg, Viu at 6, Principe di Savoia at 7, Park Hyatt and Grand Hotel et de Milan at 8, the Four Seasons and Magna Pars at 10. For a big dog the pick is NH Collection Milano CityLife, two dogs up to 25 kg each at EUR 35 per dog per night, with Portrait Milano next at 20 kg for EUR 50 a stay. Nine hotels on the list charge nothing, and Park Hyatt charges EUR 100 plus VAT a night.
Two things trip up first-time visitors. Trenord, which runs the Malpensa Express and every local train, doesn't carry dogs on weekdays between 7 and 9.30 in the morning or between 5.30 and 7.30 in the evening, and that includes small dogs in a carrier. And ATM's metro, trams and buses want the dog muzzled as well as on a lead. Pack the muzzle even if she's never worn one.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Metro, trams and buses
- ATM runs all of them. The dog travels on a lead and in a muzzle, and a dog that isn't small enough for a carrier needs its own ticket. Missori on the M3 is on the square outside Dei Cavalieri, and Duomo station is one stop on. The muzzle rule is enforced more than visitors expect, so have it on before the barriers.
- Trenord and the Malpensa Express
- Trenord takes a muzzled dog on a lead, with its registration certificate, or a small pet in a carrier no bigger than 70 x 30 x 50 cm, free within Lombardy. Dogs of either kind aren't carried on weekdays from 7 to 9.30 and from 17.30 to 19.30. That rule covers the Malpensa Express, so a weekday morning flight means a taxi to the airport or an earlier train. Keep a hand on your bags on the trains. A friend's bag was stolen on ours.
- The sights
- Sforza Castle admits dogs in the courtyards and outdoor areas only, not the museums. The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie is a plain no, guide dogs and certified therapy animals aside. The Duomo publishes no pet rule and is a working cathedral, so plan on one of you waiting outside. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a covered public street and the dog walks through it with you.
- Parks
- Parco Sempione behind the Castle is the big one, ten minutes from the hotel, with fenced off-lead areas. The Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli off Corso Venezia is eight minutes the other way. Further out, the Idroscalo by Linate takes dogs of any size on a lead, has signed off-lead areas, and is the one place near the city where a dog is allowed to swim, in the marked dog area only. No dogs in the children's playgrounds there. The Giardini Pubblici also have the Mobility Dog Park, an agility course with tunnels, see-saws, hoops and a slalom on the Via Manin side, and Largo Marinai d'Italia east of the centre has a fenced dog area. The city's signed aree cani are the off-lead spots, so assume the lead stays on everywhere else.
- Restaurants and cafés
- Terraces are the norm and a dog under the table is ordinary. Indoors is at the owner's discretion, and most Milanese bars and trattorias say yes to a calm dog. A sign on the door is the signal either way. The rooftop bar at Dei Cavalieri is the one to confirm at check-in. Hotel dining rooms are the exception. Park Hyatt keeps dogs out of every restaurant and bar, and most other hotels don't publish a rule.
- Fees, weight limits and two dogs
- Free at Armani, Bvlgari, the Four Seasons, Grand Hotel et de Milan, Magna Pars, Mandarin Oriental, Palazzo Parigi, Senato and The Unique. EUR 25 a night at Dei Cavalieri, EUR 30 a stay at Palazzo Segreti, EUR 35 a night at NH Collection CityLife and Principe di Savoia, EUR 50 a stay at Portrait, EUR 80 a stay at Viu and EUR 100 plus VAT a night at Park Hyatt. Most caps sit between 5 and 10 kg, Portrait takes 20 kg and NH Collection CityLife 25 kg. NH Collection CityLife and Principe di Savoia take two dogs, and at Principe di Savoia it's two of up to 7 kg.
- Getting there
- Malpensa is the main airport, about 50 km out, with the Malpensa Express into Cadorna and Centrale. Linate is the city airport and the M4 metro runs into the centre. Flying from Britain, the return leg is the problem: the UK doesn't take pets in the cabin on arrival and the main UK and Irish carriers don't carry them in the cabin at all, so most people arrive by a carrier that does, or overland. The flights app has the detail by route.
- Vets
- Clinica Veterinaria Gran Sasso, Via Donatello 26, is open 24 hours with an emergency department, phone 02 2663095. AniCura Clinica Veterinaria Tibaldi, Via Pezzotti 2, runs 24 hours too, phone 02 58106826. AniCura San Siro on Via Gallarate 203 keeps a 24-hour emergency service on the west side.
- Best walks
- Parco Sempione from the Castle courtyards out to the Arco della Pace, then back through Brera's streets. The Navigli towpaths from Porta Genova along the Naviglio Grande, best early before the bars fill. The Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli for a shorter loop near Corso Venezia. The Idroscalo, out by Linate on the M4, for a proper long walk round the water and the only dog swimming near the city.
- When to go
- April to June and September to October. July and August are hot and humid, the streets hold the heat, and much of the city shuts for the middle of August. November to February brings fog and cold, which most dogs handle better than the summer. Milan Design Week in April and the fashion weeks in late February and late September fill the hotels and push prices up, so book early or go the week after.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Milan
Is Milan dog friendly?+
Yes, for a dog that copes with a city. Dogs ride the metro and trams with ATM, muzzled and on a lead, sit under café tables all over town, and have Parco Sempione and the Navigli for walks. The centre is flat and compact. The thing to plan around is Trenord's weekday rush-hour ban on dogs, which covers the Malpensa Express.
Which Milan hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+
Hotel Dei Cavalieri Milano Duomo. Daisy went to the restaurant, the bar and breakfast, and the hotel asks that you confirm the dining areas with staff when you check in. Park Hyatt is a clear no in all its restaurants and bars. The other hotels on our list don't publish a rule, so ask before you book.
How much do Milan hotels charge for a dog?+
Nine hotels on our list charge nothing, including Armani, Bvlgari, Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons. Dei Cavalieri charges EUR 25 per dog per night with a dog bed and bowls in the room. NH Collection CityLife and Principe di Savoia charge EUR 35 a night, Portrait EUR 50 a stay, Viu EUR 80 a stay, and Park Hyatt EUR 100 plus VAT a night.
Where should I stay in Milan with a big dog?+
NH Collection Milano CityLife, which takes two dogs up to 25 kg each at EUR 35 per dog per night, with the CityLife park at the door. Portrait Milano in the Quadrilatero takes dogs up to 20 kg for EUR 50 a stay. Avoid Palazzo Parigi, Viu and Principe di Savoia, which cap at 5 to 7 kg, and Dei Cavalieri, which takes small dogs only.
Do dogs need a muzzle on the Milan metro?+
Yes. ATM's rule on the metro, trams and buses is a lead and a muzzle, and a ticket for a dog that isn't in a carrier. Trenord's local trains and the Malpensa Express want the muzzle too, plus the dog's registration papers.
Can I take my dog on the Malpensa Express?+
Yes, muzzled and on a lead or in a carrier no bigger than 70 x 30 x 50 cm, and it's free within Lombardy. Not on weekdays between 7 and 9.30 in the morning or between 17.30 and 19.30. For a weekday morning flight, take a taxi or an earlier train.
Can dogs go into the Duomo or Sforza Castle?+
Sforza Castle, yes in the courtyards and grounds, no in the museums. The Duomo publishes no pet rule and is a working cathedral, so assume no and take turns. The Last Supper refuses dogs outright. The Galleria is a public street and the dog is fine there.
Where can my dog run off lead or swim in Milan?+
Parco Sempione has fenced off-lead areas ten minutes from the Duomo, and the Giardini Pubblici have the Mobility Dog Park agility course on the Via Manin side. The Idroscalo, out by Linate on the M4, takes dogs of any size on a lead, has signed off-lead areas, and allows dogs to swim in its marked dog area only. Nowhere else near the centre allows a dog in the water.
When is the best time to visit Milan with a dog?+
April to June and September to October. July and August are hot, humid and half shut. Avoid Design Week in April and the fashion weeks in late February and late September unless you've booked early, because the hotels fill and prices climb.
Can I bring two dogs to a hotel in Milan?+
Yes, at a few. NH Collection Milano CityLife takes two dogs up to 25 kg each. Principe di Savoia takes two up to 7 kg each at EUR 35 a day, and it's worth asking whether that's per dog or per room. Tivoli President takes two small dogs. Most other Milan hotels take one.
