Where can my dog actually go?

Valencia is a flat city with a nine kilometre park running through the middle of it, which is the best thing about it for a dog. The Turia gardens follow the old riverbed from the Bioparc in the west to the City of Arts and Sciences in the east, and you can walk the whole way on a lead without crossing a road. The sea is a different story. Valencia's beach ordinance keeps dogs off the sand at Malvarrosa, Cabanyal, Pinedo and El Saler all year, and the one exception is a marked dog zone at the south end of Pinedo that opens from 15 June to 30 September. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs, five of them five-stars and six brand four-stars. That's close to every qualifying hotel in the city, because almost every independent four and five-star in the old town refuses pets outright, and so do the beachfront Las Arenas, Caro Hotel, Palacio Vallier and SH Valencia Palace.

None of the eleven lets a dog into a restaurant, so pick on the rest of the building. Palacio Santa Clara publishes the widest access, dogs in all areas except the restaurant and the bar, so the lobby and the corridors are yours. Only YOU is the one that treats the dog as a guest, with a bed, a bowl and a goodie bag in the room, and it will let a dog into El Mirador as long as it stays in its carrier, which is a yes for a small dog and a no for everyone else, and the closest thing to dining access in Valencia. Grand Hotel Centenari is the clearest the other way: dogs in the room and at the front desk, nowhere else. NH Valencia Center publishes the most exact rules in the city, dogs on a lead through the public areas but not in the restaurant, bar, breakfast room, pool, terrace, sauna or gym, and left in the room only while you eat in the hotel with your mobile at reception. INNSiDE Valencia Oceanic runs its own dog programme with a welcome gift and organic in-room amenities. Hospes Palau de la Mar, The Westin and the other four-stars publish no access rules beyond the room, so ask by name when you book.

Fees are per night at most of them. Catalonia Excelsior charges EUR 22 plus a EUR 200 deposit, Palacio Santa Clara EUR 25 plus 10 percent VAT, Hotel Zenit, Sercotel Sorolla Palace and NH Valencia Center EUR 25, Hospes and Grand Hotel Centenari EUR 30 a night, and Only YOU EUR 85 for the whole stay per dog plus a deposit, with a EUR 120 charge on top if the room needs extra cleaning. The Westin quotes on request, and Meliá Valencia and INNSiDE don't publish a fee. Watch the caps. Meliá Valencia stops at 8 kg and only in its Supreme rooms, Only YOU and Sercotel at 10 kg, Hospes at 12 kg, Palacio Santa Clara and Catalonia Excelsior take one dog up to 20 kg, and NH Valencia Center and Hotel Zenit go to 25 kg. The Westin goes to 30 kg, which makes it the pick for a big dog. For two dogs it's Grand Hotel Centenari, which publishes no weight limit, or NH Valencia Center, two dogs up to 25 kg at EUR 25 each.

Two traps. Grand Hotel Centenari sits on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and Only YOU, Catalonia Excelsior and Hotel Zenit are all within a few minutes of it, and from 1 to 19 March that square fires a mascletà at two o'clock every afternoon, a five minute ground-level firework display that shakes windows several streets back. Book a dog into either hotel in Fallas week and you are booking a bad week. Hotel Zenit also excludes some dates from dog stays without listing them, so ask whether Fallas is one. Second, Patacona beach, the strip directly north of Malvarrosa, is in Alboraya rather than Valencia, so the city ordinance stops at the boundary and Alboraya runs its own summer dog beach there. Check Alboraya's dates separately, they are not Valencia's.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Valencia's own ordinance bans dogs from the city's beaches at any time of year, which covers Malvarrosa, Cabanyal, Pinedo, El Saler and La Devesa. The one exception is the marked dog zone at the south end of Pinedo, about 9,900 square metres of shared sand and a roped section of sea, open 15 June to 30 September from nine in the morning to seven in the evening. It is staffed, dogs stay on a lead outside the marked area, and you need the dog's passport or vaccination card with you. In 2025 it opened weeks late, so check it is running before you drive out.
The Turia gardens
The old riverbed is a nine kilometre park from the Bioparc end to the City of Arts and Sciences, flat, shaded in stretches and crossed by bridges rather than roads. Dogs go on a lead, and the city has put fenced dog runs along it where they can come off. The plazas around the City of Arts and Sciences are open ground and fine to walk, but the buildings themselves publish no dog rule, so assume no inside.
Metro, tram and bus
Metrovalencia, which runs the metro and the tram, only takes dogs in a cage or a carrier, free of charge, so a dog that doesn't fit in a bag doesn't ride, including the airport lines and the tram out to the beach. EMT Valencia buses need an EMT Pet Pass, EUR 5 and valid two years, applied for at an EMT office with a form, a copy of your ID, the dog's vet record and a passport photo of the dog. It covers dogs up to 15 kg with a microchip, in a carrier no bigger than 45 by 35 by 25 cm, three pets per bus at most, so it's a small-dog option and one to sort before you arrive. Renfe's Cercanías local trains take a dog of any size free on a lead and muzzle. Taxis are at the driver's discretion.
Trains to and from Madrid and Barcelona
Renfe takes a dog up to 10 kg in a carrier no bigger than 60 by 35 by 35 cm on AVE, Avlo and Media Distancia trains, one per person. Dogs up to 40 kg travel on a bought seat beside you, muzzled and on a lead of no more than 1.5 metres at the station, for EUR 40 on the AVE and Avlo. That excludes listed dangerous breeds, dogs under a year and bitches in heat, and each train carries two large dogs at most, so book early.
Dogs at breakfast and in the restaurant
No hotel on the list allows a dog in its restaurant, and Palacio Santa Clara, Grand Hotel Centenari and NH Valencia Center also keep dogs out of the bar. NH Valencia Center is a clear no for the breakfast room too. Only YOU lets a small dog into El Mirador in a carrier. The rest publish no rule for breakfast, so ask, and expect to use a terrace or take a tray up.
Weight limits and two dogs
Meliá Valencia caps at 8 kg in Supreme rooms only, Only YOU and Sercotel Sorolla Palace at 10 kg, Hospes Palau de la Mar at 12 kg, Palacio Santa Clara and Catalonia Excelsior at 20 kg, NH Valencia Center and Hotel Zenit at 25 kg and The Westin at 30 kg. Two dogs is Grand Hotel Centenari, which publishes no limit and charges EUR 30 plus VAT a night for the room, or NH Valencia Center, two up to 25 kg at EUR 25 each.
Getting there
Valencia airport is at Manises, about eight kilometres west, on metro lines 3 and 5. No airline flying from the UK brings a pet dog into the cabin, Ryanair carries no animals, and Aer Lingus sends dogs as cargo, so from Britain or Ireland the realistic routes are Iberia into Madrid with the dog in the cabin and the train on to Valencia, or driving down through France. Aena lists no pet relief area at Valencia airport.
Vets
AniCura Constitución at Alcudia de Crespins 12, 46019, on 96 365 14 10, and AniCura Benipeixcar at Avenida Constitución 68, 46009, on 963 483 098, both run 24 hour emergency departments in the north of the city. AniCura Valencia Sur at Avenida Picassent 28 in Silla, on 961 203 805, is the 24 hour referral hospital on the south side, handy for El Saler and the Albufera.
Best walks
The Turia gardens end to end, nine kilometres from the Bioparc bridges past the Palau de la Música to the City of Arts and Sciences, with the Jardines del Real beside The Westin as a detour. The Jardines de Viveros for a shorter loop. The Malvarrosa and Cabanyal promenade behind the sand, which the beach ban doesn't touch. The pine paths of La Devesa between the Albufera lake and the sea, on a lead, and the Pinedo dog zone from mid June to the end of September when you want the dog in the water. For a proper day out, the Sierra Calderona is about 40 minutes inland.
When to go
March to early June and late September to November are the months. Summer sits above thirty degrees with sea humidity and the paving holds it into the night, so July and August mean walks before nine and after eight, and the only sand a dog is allowed on is the Pinedo zone, which has its own crowd. Avoid 1 to 19 March unless your dog is deaf to fireworks: the mascletà goes off in Plaza del Ayuntamiento at two every afternoon and Fallas week itself is petardos on every corner. Winter is mild and the Turia is at its best, but the dog beach is shut from October to mid June.

Dog-friendly hotels in Valencia

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Valencia

Is Valencia dog friendly?+

In the parks and on the terraces, yes. The Turia gardens give a dog nine kilometres of car-free walking, and eleven hotels on our list take dogs, though most of the old town's independent luxury hotels don't. The sea is the catch. The city keeps dogs off all its beaches year round apart from one marked zone at Pinedo from 15 June to 30 September, and the metro and tram only take a dog in a carrier.

Can dogs go on the beach in Valencia?+

Not on the city beaches. Valencia's ordinance bans dogs from Malvarrosa, Cabanyal, Pinedo, El Saler and La Devesa at any time of year. The exception is the dog zone at the south end of Pinedo, open 15 June to 30 September, nine to seven. Patacona, just north of Malvarrosa, belongs to Alboraya, which runs its own summer dog beach under its own dates.

Can I take my dog on the metro in Valencia?+

Only in a cage or carrier. Metrovalencia lets small pets travel free in a carrier and admits no other dogs apart from guide and assistance dogs, and that covers the tram to the beach and the airport lines. For a dog that won't fit in a bag, it's a taxi at the driver's discretion or your feet. EMT buses take dogs up to 15 kg in a carrier, but only with an EMT Pet Pass applied for in person at an EMT office.

How much do Valencia hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 22 a night plus a EUR 200 deposit at Catalonia Excelsior, EUR 25 at Hotel Zenit, Sercotel Sorolla Palace and NH Valencia Center, EUR 25 plus 10 percent VAT at Palacio Santa Clara, EUR 30 at Hospes Palau de la Mar and EUR 30 plus VAT at Grand Hotel Centenari. Only YOU charges EUR 85 per dog for the whole stay plus a deposit, and can add EUR 120 for extraordinary cleaning. The Westin quotes on request, and Meliá Valencia and INNSiDE don't publish a fee.

Where should I stay in Valencia with a big dog?+

The Westin Valencia, which takes dogs up to 30 kg and sits beside the Jardines del Real and the Turia gardens. NH Valencia Center and Hotel Zenit both go to 25 kg, and NH takes two. Grand Hotel Centenari publishes no weight limit at all, though the dog is confined to the room and the front desk area. Everything else caps at 20 kg or less.

Which Valencia hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

None of them into a restaurant proper. Only YOU allows a dog into El Mirador in its carrier. Palacio Santa Clara allows dogs everywhere except the restaurant and the bar. Grand Hotel Centenari keeps dogs to the room and the front desk, and NH Valencia Center keeps them out of the restaurant, bar, breakfast room and terrace. The others publish nothing beyond the room.

Can I take my dog to the City of Arts and Sciences?+

You can walk the grounds and the pools around the buildings on a lead, and the Turia gardens run straight into them. The Oceanogràfic admits assistance dogs only, and the Hemisfèric and the science museum publish no dog rule, so treat the interiors as a no. The Bioparc at the other end of the Turia is also assistance dogs only.

Can dogs go on the Albufera boat trips?+

None of the boat operators at El Palmar or the Gola de Pujol publishes a rule, so ring the one you want before you drive out. The park's pine paths through La Devesa are fine on a lead. The sand at El Saler and La Devesa is inside Valencia's beach ban.

Is Fallas a problem with a dog?+

Yes. From 1 to 19 March a mascletà, five minutes of ground-level fireworks, goes off in Plaza del Ayuntamiento at two every afternoon, and from 15 to 19 March there are firecrackers on every street and night fireworks in the Turia. Grand Hotel Centenari is on the square and Only YOU is a street away. Pick another fortnight.
