Sylt is one of the easiest places in northern Europe to bring a dog, as long as you know the beach calendar. From 15 March to 31 October dogs are only allowed on the island's 15 marked dog beaches, and from 1 November to 14 March they can run off the lead on nearly every beach. The buses carry dogs free, dogs pay no Kurabgabe, and the tourist board says many restaurants put out water bowls. Our list carries one hotel here, Relais & Châteaux Landhaus Stricker in Tinnum.
What makes Landhaus Stricker worth booking is breakfast. Dogs on a lead are welcome at breakfast in the bar, the Kaminzimmer fireplace room and on the terrace, which is where most luxury hotels draw the line. The exception is Bodendorf's, the Michelin-starred restaurant, which doesn't take dogs, and the hotel will arrange a dog-sitter for a fee so you can eat there. Bowls are provided, and the hotel hands you tips for Sylt with a dog when you arrive.
The fee starts at EUR 25 per dog per night, confirmed at booking, and dogs stay in designated dog-friendly rooms. No weight limit is published, so a big dog is possible, but mention it when you book. Tinnum sits in the middle of the island, a short drive from the dog beaches at Westerland and Rantum.
Know the lead zones before you go. All of Westerland including the promenade, all of List including the Ellenbogen, every beach on the east side, the nature reserves such as the Braderuper Heide, Morsum Kliff and the Rantumbecken, and any dyke with sheep grazing are lead-only all year. Breaking the rules is fined.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Dog beaches
- From 15 March to 31 October dogs are allowed only on the 15 marked dog beaches, some with a lead rule and some without, and you can't cross other beach sections to reach them. On a lead you can still walk the waterline on almost every beach except Westerland and Rantum, going down and back only by the dog-beach crossings. From 1 November to 14 March dogs can go off lead on nearly all beaches, apart from List, Kampen, the busiest beaches and the whole east side.
- Where the dog beaches are
- Westerland at the Nordseeklinik and Südwäldchen crossings, plus Baakdeel and Dikjen Deel to the south. Rantum at the campsite (section 15), Henning-Rinken-Wai, Tadjem Deel, Samoa and Sansibar. Hörnum at the Aralsteg and Kap-Horn crossings. Wenningstedt at Campingplatz Nord and Seestraße Süd. Kampen at Buhne 16 and the Sturmhaube, both lead-only. List at sections 17 and 19, south end.
- Lead zones
- Lead-only all year: the whole of Westerland including the promenade, the whole of List including the Ellenbogen because sheep roam free, beaches on the east side, dykes where sheep and lambs graze, nature reserves such as the Braderuper Heide, Morsum Kliff and the Rantumbecken, parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, markets and public events, and public transport.
- Off-lead areas
- Three free-run areas, all in or near Westerland: the Hundefreilauffläche am Fliegerhorst, the Hundefreilauffläche Westerland and the dog run in the Nordwäldchen.
- Getting on the island
- The red DB Sylt Shuttle car train takes 35 minutes from Niebüll to Westerland and leaves every 30 to 90 minutes, EUR 75 one way or EUR 130 return for a car, with the dog priced in. The engine stays off, so bring water in summer and a blanket in winter. The blue AUTOZUG Sylt uses the same terminal. The SyltFähre from Rømø in Denmark to List charges nothing extra for a dog in a car and a small supplement on foot, lead on board and vaccination papers to hand.
- Trains and buses
- On Deutsche Bahn trains a small dog in a carrier rides free, a bigger dog needs a half-price ticket, a lead and a muzzle. The Marschbahn runs from Hamburg to Westerland and some ICs run through without changing. SVG island buses carry dogs free, always on a lead.
- Kurabgabe
- In Tinnum, Westerland and Rantum the Kurabgabe is EUR 4.10 per person per day from 1 May to 31 October and EUR 2.05 from 1 November to 30 April. Children up to 18 and dogs don't pay. The guest card from the hotel gets you through every beach entrance on the island.
- Vets and hazards
- The Sylter Tierarztpraxis is in Tinnum at Boy-Nielsen-Straße 15b, 04651 44 64 40. The island's out-of-hours vet line is 04651 29 97 791. Watch for sand colic after a lot of fetching on the beach, and keep dogs away from the hairy caterpillars of the brown-tail moth, which are turning up along the North Sea coast.
- Best walks
- The dog beaches at the Nordseeklinik and Südwäldchen in Westerland and along the Rantum stretch south-west of Tinnum, off lead where the signs allow it and freely from November to mid-March. The Rantumbecken nature-reserve loop on a lead for birdlife. The Ellenbogen at the northern tip for dunes and empty beaches, on a lead all year because of the sheep. The Kampen Kliff path along the red cliff. The Tinnumer Wiesen meadows straight from Landhaus Stricker.
- When to go
- November to mid-March is the dog owner's season on Sylt. The beaches are nearly empty and dogs can run off the lead on most of them, and the Christmas markets fill December, with the Sylter Wintermarkt in Westerland from 4 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Leads are compulsory at markets. Spring and autumn are the tourist board's own recommendation, rougher seas, strong wind and quiet sand. From 15 March to 31 October dogs are restricted to the marked dog beaches, and July and August are the busiest weeks.
