Where can my dog actually go?

Santorini is the hardest island in Europe to do with a dog, and we can now say that with numbers. We researched 77 hotels through our booking partner and 14 take dogs. Most of the cave-suite hotels on the caldera refuse outright, and half of those that say yes cap the dog at 5 to 10 kg. The ones that work are worth knowing. Andronis Arcadia in Oia takes dogs free with bowls in the room. NOŪS in Mesaria and Domes Novos near Oia take dogs to 10 kg on flat ground with gardens. Vedema in Megalochori takes a 5 kg dog around a 400-year-old winery. Sandblu near Kamari takes dogs free. The three Katikies houses take dogs to 5 kg. Nobu takes one to 8 kg.

The real question here isn't the fee, it's the steps. Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira are built into a cliff. There are no lifts, the paths are stone stairs, and in July the stairs are hot enough to hurt paws. A cliff hotel suits a small dog you can carry. For anything bigger, stay on the flat side of the island: NOŪS, Domes Novos, Vedema, Sandblu, Bellonias Villas on Kamari beach or Valsamo Suites in Pyrgos.

Getting there is fine. Blue Star ferries from Piraeus take dogs in kennels or a pet cabin, SeaJets take small dogs in a carrier at your seat, and both dock at Athinios port which connects by road. Never plan on the Fira old port donkey steps or the cable car with a dog. Fees run from free at Andronis Arcadia, Sandblu, Bellonias and the Katikies houses to EUR 120 per stay at Nobu.

What happens when you get there

The steps
Every caldera hotel in Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira is reached by stone stairs with no lift, and the stone gets hot enough to burn paws by midday in summer. Carry a small dog, and with a larger dog stay on the flat side of the island.
Weight limits
Katikies Pelagos, Gea and Chromata 5 kg, Vedema 5 kg, Andronis Concept 7 kg, Nobu 8 kg, NOŪS and Domes Novos 10 kg, Cavo Tagoo and Bellonias small dogs. No published limit at Andronis Arcadia, Sandblu, Sophia Luxury Suites or Valsamo.
Ferries
Blue Star from Piraeus takes dogs in on-board kennels or a bookable pet cabin, with a lead and muzzle on the open deck. SeaJets takes dogs under 10 kg in a carrier at your seat and larger dogs in cages. Declare the dog at booking, bring the EU pet passport. Both dock at Athinios, which connects by road.
Fira old port
The 588 donkey steps between the old port and Fira are steep, hot and shared with mules, and the cable car doesn't publish a dog policy. Arrive by road from Athinios or the airport instead.
Beaches
Leashed dogs are tolerated outside the organised sunbed sections at Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos, at Monolithos and Exo Gialos on the east coast, and at Baxedes and Katharos below Oia. Black sand gets very hot, walk early or late.
Season
Almost every hotel closes from November to March or April. May, June, September and October are the months for a dog, with the stairs bearable and the sea still warm.
Best walks
The Fira to Oia caldera path via Imerovigli and Skaros Rock at dawn, the Kamari seafront promenade, the Profitis Ilias monastery walk from Pyrgos, and the lanes of Megalochori.
When to go
May, June, September and October. July and August are too hot for a dog on the cliff and the beaches are packed.

Can I take my dog on the ferry to Santorini?+
