Where can my dog actually go?

San Sebastián is a dog city for eight months of the year. From 1 October to 31 May dogs run on La Concha, Ondarreta and Zurriola with no time limit, and the town is full of them. From June to September the three city beaches are closed to dogs and the hotels get stricter. Six hillside parks, Urgull above the old town among them, have off-lead hours every day, so there's always somewhere to let her run.

Nine hotels made the catalogue, and the luxury end is mostly a no. The thing that separates the nine is where the dog can actually be. Hotel Tres Reyes by the Urumea is the only one that publishes it, with dogs welcome on the terrace and in the outdoor areas and kept out of the restaurant, bar and café. The Maria Cristina lets dogs into the public areas on a lead with a Pet Welcome Kit of bed, mat and bowls, but not anywhere food and drink is served, terraces included. ILUNION in the Antiguo gives a kit with a toy and treats, a bed and bowls. NH Collection Aránzazu, 700 metres from Ondarreta, has had a dog bed and bowls set up in the room on arrival and times housekeeping around your walks. Nobu on the bay, Catalonia Donosti with its bowls, Antik, Zenit in Amara and INNSiDE Orly 100 metres from La Concha round it out.

Fees run from EUR 15 at Antik, through EUR 25 at Zenit and Catalonia (plus a EUR 200 refundable deposit), EUR 30 at Tres Reyes and EUR 35 at ILUNION and NH Collection, up to EUR 100 per stay at the Maria Cristina and Nobu. Watch the weight limits. Tres Reyes caps at 15 kg, Catalonia at 20 kg, Zenit and NH Collection at 25 kg, while ILUNION and Antik take dogs of any size, which makes ILUNION, with its kit, the pick for a big dog. NH Collection is the one to book with two dogs.

Akelarre, Arima, Londres y de Inglaterra, Villa Favorita, Villa Soro, Lasala Plaza, Palacio de Aiete and Palacio Bellas Artes all refuse, and Barceló Costa Vasca has dropped the group dog programme. Check one thing before you book INNSiDE Orly. It closed for renovation from late September 2025, so confirm it has reopened.

What happens when you get there

Beach season
Dogs are allowed on La Concha, Ondarreta and Zurriola from 1 October to 31 May with no time limit, and the beaches fill with dogs. From 1 June to 30 September treat all three as closed to dogs. In summer, Hondarribia beach about 20 km east and Itzurun at Zumaia take dogs until 14 June and again from 16 September, and Antilla at Orio allows them from 21:00 to 06:00 only.
Off-lead parks
Dogs can run free from 18:00 to 12:00 in six hillside parks: Miramón, Lau Haizeta, Otxoki, Ametzagaina, Ulia and Urgull. Urgull's summer hours are shorter, 19:00 to 10:00. Alderdi Eder gardens, Cristina Enea Park and the Miramar Palace gardens all take dogs on a lead, and the Guau dog park in Amara is fenced and off-lead.
Monte Igueldo
Dogs ride the funicular on a lead for EUR 2.50 and can walk the park at the top.
Buses, trains and taxis
Dbus city buses take small dogs only, in your arms or a carrier. Renfe Cercanías takes any size in a carrier or on a lead with a muzzle, one per passenger. Euskotren, the Topo to Hendaye and the line to Bilbao, takes any size on a lead. For a taxi, call Taxi Donosti on +34 943 464 646 and ask for a dog-friendly car.
Pintxos bars
In Spain bars and restaurants decide for themselves, and dogs are allowed unless a sign at the door says otherwise. Terrace seating in the Old Town is generally fine with a dog. Inside the bars it depends on the owner.

EUR 15 at Antik, EUR 25 at Zenit, EUR 25 at Catalonia plus a EUR 200 refundable deposit, EUR 30 at Tres Reyes, EUR 35 at ILUNION and at NH Collection (per dog), EUR 100 per stay at Maria Cristina and Nobu. For something simpler, the three-star Hotel Avenida charges EUR 15 a day and sets aside a fenced garden area for dogs.
Getting there
No pet dogs fly in the cabin into the UK, Ryanair carries no pets and Aer Lingus is cargo only. The dog-friendly route is Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to Bilbao, with pet-friendly cabins and kennels at GBP 50 per pet each way, then about 100 km by road or Euskotren with a dog of any size on a lead.
Vets
Centro Veterinario Katamotz is in town at Euskal Herria Kalea 5 (+34 943 107 849), hours not published. The nearest 24-hour emergency lines are in Irun, about 20 km east: Amaita Veterinaria (+34 618 893 420) and Clínica Veterinaria Plaiaundi (+34 687 409 777). Ask your hotel for the current on-call vet when you arrive.
Best walks
La Concha promenade end to end, Ondarreta west to the Peine del Viento sculptures at the foot of Igueldo, the Urumea riverside, Monte Urgull above the old town with its off-lead hours, Ulia along the cliffs, and Cristina Enea Park.
When to go
October to May if the beach matters. September is warm and the ban lifts on 1 October. This is mild, wet Atlantic weather, not a heat destination. With a noise-sensitive dog, know that Semana Grande in mid-August brings nightly fireworks over the bay, and the Tamborrada on 20 January means 24 hours of drumming through the streets.
