Where can my dog actually go?

Saint-Tropez is a small port town with a very big summer, and for a dog that cuts both ways. The old town, the Vieux Port and the plane trees of Place des Lices are all walkable on a lead, and the sentier du littoral leaves from the foot of the Citadelle and runs round the headland past Graniers, Les Canebiers and Les Salins towards Pampelonne. The catch is the sand. In the 2026 season the town let dogs onto its beaches only from 6am to 9.30am and 6.30pm to 10pm between 16 July and 15 September, and outside those hours they were banned. Ten hotels on our list take dogs, from a hilltop palace that charges nothing to a beachfront maison that keeps them off its own sand.

What separates them is where the dog can go, and here most of the town publishes very little beyond the room. Hotel Byblos says one dog of any size is welcome throughout the hotel, which is the clearest statement in Saint-Tropez. Airelles Château de la Messardière takes up to two dogs of any size at no charge, puts a bed, treats and a dog menu in the room and has 25 acres of gardens and footpaths to walk them in. Airelles Pan Deï Palais allows leashed dogs through the hotel and its garden right by Place des Lices. Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is plain the other way. Small and medium dogs stay, but they aren't on the hotel's beach, at the pool or in La Vague d'Or. AREV keeps dogs out of the restaurant and spa, and Lou Pinet keeps them away from the pool even on a lead.

Fees run from nothing at the Messardière, through EUR 20 at Hôtel de Paris and EUR 25 at La Ponche, EUR 30 at La Tartane and Villa Cosy, EUR 32 at Pan Deï, EUR 35 at Lou Pinet, EUR 40 at Byblos and Cheval Blanc, up to a EUR 100 minimum a night at AREV, where dogs are taken at the hotel's discretion. Watch the weight caps, because the old town is small-dog country. Hôtel de Paris and La Ponche stop at 5 kg, Lou Pinet at 8 kg, and Cheval Blanc takes small to medium dogs only. For a big dog the picks are the Messardière, Byblos and La Tartane, all of which take any size, with Pan Deï also stating large dogs are fine.

Two traps. The Zou regional buses that link Saint-Tropez to Saint-Raphaël and Toulon only carry animals under 10 kg, so a big dog arrives by car, by taxi or on the Bateaux Verts shuttle from Sainte-Maxime, where leashed dogs travel free. And the season is short. Byblos, Cheval Blanc and La Ponche close in winter, and La Tartane shuts from roughly late September to mid May, so check the hotel is open before you fall for it.

What happens when you get there

Beaches in Saint-Tropez
The town's 2026 rule let dogs onto its beaches, Bouillabaisse, Graniers, Les Canebiers, Les Salins and the rest, from 6am to 9.30am and 6.30pm to 10pm between 16 July and 15 September, and banned them outside those hours. Dogs must be on a lead near other people and the mess picked up at once. The rule for the rest of the year isn't set out in that order, and the tourist office's own beach listings still say dogs are not allowed, so ring the mairie or the police municipale before you plan a beach day.
Pampelonne and Ramatuelle
Pampelonne is in Ramatuelle, not Saint-Tropez, and runs to its own rules. From 1 April to 15 October dogs are banned from the zones reserved for bathers even on a lead, and are tolerated on a lead in the parts closed to motor vehicles. The same wording applies at Plage de l'Escalet. Leads are required on the beach year round. The beach clubs set their own policies and haven't been checked, so ask the club directly.
The sentier du littoral
The coastal path is the dog's best friend here. The town's beach order specifically exempts walkers with a dog on a lead using the sentier du littoral, so you can follow it from the Citadelle and the marine cemetery round past Graniers and Les Canebiers to Les Salins at any hour. The Ramatuelle stretch carries on along Pampelonne to Cap Camarat, L'Escalet and Cap Taillat. Take water, there's little shade on the capes.
Buses and the shuttle boat
The Zou regional buses, line 876 from Saint-Raphaël and line 878 along the coast from Toulon, cost EUR 3 and carry only harmless animals under 10 kg, in a bag, cage or on a lead and muzzled, for EUR 2.50 paid to the driver. Category 1 and 2 dogs are refused. Anything heavier goes by car, taxi or the Bateaux Verts shuttle from Sainte-Maxime, about 20 minutes across the gulf, where dogs on a lead travel free and adults pay EUR 9.20 one way. The boats run from February to early January.
Getting there
Toulon-Hyères airport is 49 km away and Nice is 91 km. Nice has the routes from the UK and Ireland, but the carriers flying them don't take dogs in the cabin, so most owners fly into Nice via a European hub or drive. The nearest stations are Saint-Raphaël, Les Arcs-Draguignan and Toulon, with TER trains from there to the coast taking small dogs in a closed bag or larger dogs muzzled for a flat EUR 5.
Fees and weight limits
Free at the Messardière. EUR 20 at Hôtel de Paris, EUR 25 at La Ponche, EUR 30 at La Tartane and Villa Cosy, EUR 32 at Pan Deï, EUR 35 at Lou Pinet, EUR 40 at Byblos and Cheval Blanc, all per night. AREV charges a EUR 100 minimum a night and takes dogs at its discretion, with only a few pet rooms. On size, Hôtel de Paris and La Ponche take one dog up to 5 kg, Lou Pinet caps at 8 kg, Cheval Blanc takes small to medium dogs only, and Villa Cosy and AREV publish no figure. The Messardière, Byblos and La Tartane take any size, and Pan Deï states large dogs are welcome.
Seasonal closures
Byblos, Cheval Blanc and La Ponche close for the winter, La Ponche from early January to late March. La Tartane shuts from roughly late September to mid May. The Citadelle museum stays open year round, 10am to 6.30pm from April to September and 10am to 5.30pm the rest of the year, though whether a dog can come into the grounds isn't published.
Vets
Clinique vétérinaire des Plages, 138 Route des Plages, +33 4 94 97 72 42, is open Monday to Saturday and lists English among its languages. Out of hours it routes calls through +33 7 77 00 00 79 to the UVD emergency veterinary clinic at Puget-sur-Argens.
Best walks
The sentier du littoral from the Citadelle and the marine cemetery round the headland past Plage des Graniers and Les Canebiers to Plage des Salins, with a lead on and no beach-hour restriction. Place des Lices under the plane trees early in the morning before the market and the boules. The Vieux Port quays and the lanes of La Ponche. The gardens and botanical footpaths of the Messardière estate if you're staying there. And the Ramatuelle coast path along Pampelonne to the Cap Camarat lighthouse, L'Escalet and the Cap Taillat isthmus.
When to go
Late April to June and mid September to October are the months for a dog. The town is open, the water is warm enough from June, and you're outside the 16 July to 15 September window when the Saint-Tropez beaches are shut to dogs bar the early and late hours. July and August mean heat on the cobbles, crowds on Place des Lices and Pampelonne's bathing zones closed to dogs from April to mid October. From November most of the hotels on this list are shut, La Tartane from late September, so a winter trip needs a hotel that stays open and a plan built around the coast path rather than the sand.

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Saint-Tropez

Is Saint-Tropez dog friendly?+

Yes, with a summer catch. Ten hotels on our list take dogs, the old town and Place des Lices are walkable on a lead and the sentier du littoral round the headland is open to leashed dogs at any hour. The beaches are the problem. In the 2026 season the town let dogs on only from 6am to 9.30am and 6.30pm to 10pm between 16 July and 15 September, and the tourist office's beach listings still say dogs aren't allowed, so ring ahead.

Can dogs go on the beach in Saint-Tropez?+

Between 16 July and 15 September 2026 the town's order allowed dogs on its beaches from 6am to 9.30am and 6.30pm to 10pm, on a lead near other people, and banned them at all other times. The order doesn't say what applies outside those dates, so check with the mairie. Pampelonne is in Ramatuelle and bans dogs from its bathing zones from 1 April to 15 October, tolerating them on a lead in the motor-free zones.

Which Saint-Tropez hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

Hotel Byblos says dogs are welcome throughout the hotel, which is the only broad statement in town. Cheval Blanc keeps dogs out of La Vague d'Or and its pool and beach, and AREV keeps them out of the restaurant and spa. The Messardière, Pan Deï, La Ponche, Hôtel de Paris, Lou Pinet, Villa Cosy and La Tartane don't publish a rule for their restaurants, so ask by name when you book.

How much do Saint-Tropez hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Airelles Château de la Messardière. EUR 20 a night at Hôtel de Paris, EUR 25 at La Ponche, EUR 30 at La Tartane and Villa Cosy, EUR 32 at Pan Deï, EUR 35 at Lou Pinet and EUR 40 at Byblos and Cheval Blanc. AREV charges a EUR 100 minimum a night.

Where should I stay in Saint-Tropez with a big dog?+

Avoid Hôtel de Paris and La Ponche, which stop at 5 kg, Lou Pinet at 8 kg, and Cheval Blanc, which takes small to medium dogs only. A big dog also can't use the Zou buses, which cap animals at 10 kg.

Which Saint-Tropez hotels take two dogs?+

Airelles Château de la Messardière, Airelles Pan Deï Palais and Hôtel La Tartane take two. Byblos, Hôtel de Paris, La Ponche, Lou Pinet and Villa Cosy take one. AREV and Cheval Blanc don't publish a number.

Can I take my dog on the bus or boat to Saint-Tropez?+

The Zou buses from Saint-Raphaël and Toulon take only animals under 10 kg, in a bag or cage or leashed and muzzled, for EUR 2.50. The Bateaux Verts shuttle from Sainte-Maxime takes dogs of any size on a lead for free, about 20 minutes across the gulf, and runs from February to early January.

Can dogs walk the sentier du littoral from Saint-Tropez?+

Yes, on a lead. The town's beach order specifically exempts walkers with a leashed dog on the coast path, so it stays open to dogs even in the summer hours when the beaches themselves are shut. It starts at the foot of the Citadelle by the marine cemetery and runs past Graniers and Les Canebiers to Les Salins, then on through Ramatuelle along Pampelonne to Cap Camarat and L'Escalet.
