Where can my dog actually go?

Porto is a hill city with a river at the bottom, which means a dog gets a lot of steps and a lot of cobbles. The good news is that the centre is small. Rua das Flores, Aliados, the Cathedral and the Ribeira quays all sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other, and the Metro takes a leashed, muzzled dog free of charge, airport line included. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs, all of them five-star apart from Torel 1884, and every one of them is in the centre.

What separates them is where the dog is allowed to go once you're inside. Hospes Infante Sagres, just off Aliados, lets a dog up to 15 kg join you throughout the hotel including the restaurant, and sets out a pet kit and bowls. The Largo, on Rua das Flores, allows dogs in the restaurant and the bar and puts out handmade bowls and a bed. Torel 1884 takes dogs on a short lead in its restaurant, bar and communal areas, and Torel Avantgarde, Torel Palace and Torel Saboaria do the same with the restaurant on a limited basis, none of them in the spa or at the pool. Wine & Books is clear the other way, no dogs in the restaurant, at breakfast, in the spa or the indoor pool. Casa da Companhia, the InterContinental, The One and the Renaissance publish a room policy and nothing about the public areas, so ask before you book if the bar matters to you.

Fees start at EUR 30 a night at Hospes Infante Sagres and the InterContinental, then EUR 45 a night plus a EUR 45 nightly deposit at the Renaissance, EUR 50 a night at Casa da Companhia and Wine & Books, and EUR 65 at Torel Avantgarde (per stay) and Torel Saboaria (per night). The four Torel hotels and Wine & Books all add a EUR 100 damage deposit. Weight caps are the real story here. Casa da Companhia takes dogs up to 5 kg only, The One up to 8 kg, The Largo and all four Torels up to 10 kg. Hospes, the InterContinental and Wine & Books go to 15 kg. The Renaissance Porto Lapa, at 20 kg, is the highest cap on the list, so it's the pick for a bigger dog, though it takes one dog per room and says nothing about its public areas.

Two things to know before you commit. The Torel name covers four separate hotels in three different districts, so check which one you've booked: 1884 and Avantgarde are near the river, Palace and Saboaria are up in Santo Ildefonso. And the beaches at Foz are off limits to dogs through the bathing season, so a summer trip with a sea-loving dog means the unsupervised sand at Matosinhos or the dog beach at Praia do Brito in Gaia, not a stroll down from the hotel.

What happens when you get there

Metro and airport line
Metro do Porto carries one dog per passenger free, on a lead of no more than one metre fixed to the collar or harness, with a muzzle on. That includes line E from the airport. On weekdays dogs ride between 10:00 and 17:00 and between 19:00 and 01:00 only, so an early or late-afternoon arrival means a taxi. Weekends and public holidays are unrestricted.
Buses, trams, funicular and trains
STCP buses take animals free but only in a carrier, placed on the floor or in the luggage space, and the driver can turn a carrier away on a full bus. The heritage trams along the river and the Guindais funicular from Batalha down to the Ribeira are run by the same group and publish no separate dog rule, so expect the carrier rule. CP's Porto urban trains carry dogs free. On the Celta train to Vigo a dog up to 10 kg travels free in a carrier of up to 60 by 35 by 35 cm, and on the Alfa Pendular from Lisbon a dog outside a carrier needs its own full-price ticket, a muzzle and a short lead.
Beaches
The Foz beaches along the seafront from Praia dos Ingleses to Castelo do Queijo are supervised in the bathing season, roughly June to September, and dogs are kept off supervised sand for those months. Outside the season they're fine on a lead. The unsupervised stretches at Matosinhos, Praia do Aterro and Praia das Pedras Brancas, are where local dogs go year round, and Praia do Brito at São Félix da Marinha in Gaia is set up for dogs through the summer with bins and bags.
Parks
The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal have the Douro views and the peacocks, the Jardim da Cordoaria and the Jardim de São Lázaro are the everyday lead-walks for the Baixa hotels, and the Parque da Cidade is the big one, 80 hectares running from Boavista to the sea at Matosinhos. Porto's first fenced dog park is at the Jardim Paula Vallada, with separate areas for big and small dogs.
Dogs at breakfast
Not one hotel on the list publishes a breakfast-room rule. Hospes Infante Sagres allows dogs throughout the hotel including the restaurant, and The Largo, Torel 1884, Torel Avantgarde, Torel Palace and Torel Saboaria admit dogs to the restaurant, so breakfast is a fair question at those six. Wine & Books is a clear no at breakfast and in the restaurant.
Weight limits
Casa da Companhia caps at 5 kg and The One at 8 kg. The Largo and the four Torels cap at 10 kg. Hospes Infante Sagres, the InterContinental and Wine & Books take up to 15 kg, and the Renaissance Porto Lapa goes to 20 kg. Nothing on the list takes a dog over 20 kg.

Best walks
Down Rua das Flores to the Ribeira quays and across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge to the Gaia waterfront, then back over the top deck for the view. The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal for the river terraces, the Jardim da Cordoaria and the Jardim de São Lázaro for a quick morning loop from the Baixa hotels. For a proper run, a taxi out to the Parque da Cidade and on through to the seafront at Matosinhos, or the Foz promenade from the Jardim do Passeio Alegre north past the Castelo do Queijo.
When to go
April to June and September to October are the months. The Atlantic keeps Porto milder than Lisbon, with summer highs usually in the mid-twenties, but the hills and the cobbles are hard work for a dog in any heat and the sea is cold even in August. The Foz beaches are closed to dogs through the bathing season, so a beach dog is better off in spring or autumn. Avoid the night of 23 June, São João, when the whole city is out with fireworks and plastic hammers until dawn. November to February is wet, often very wet, and the riverside steps get slippery.

Is Porto dog friendly?+

Yes, with two conditions. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs and the Metro carries them free, but every hotel caps the weight at 20 kg or less, and the city beaches are closed to dogs in the bathing season. Restaurants have been allowed to admit dogs indoors since 2018, and many in the centre do, so look for the sticker at the door.

Nothing in Porto on our list takes a dog over 20 kg, so a Labrador-sized dog needs a phone call before you book anywhere.

Can I take my dog on the Porto Metro?+

Yes, free, one dog per passenger, on a lead no longer than a metre and wearing a muzzle. On weekdays it's only allowed between 10:00 and 17:00 and between 19:00 and 01:00. Weekends and public holidays are unrestricted. STCP buses take dogs in a carrier only.

Can dogs go on the beach in Porto?+

Not on the Foz beaches in the bathing season, roughly June to September, when the supervised beaches keep dogs off. Outside those months they're fine on a lead. In summer head to the unsupervised sand at Praia do Aterro or Praia das Pedras Brancas in Matosinhos, or to Praia do Brito in Gaia, which is set up for dogs through the season.

Can I take my dog into Livraria Lello or the Clérigos Tower?+

Livraria Lello doesn't admit dogs, and the queue outside is no place to leave one either. The Clérigos Tower, the Palácio da Bolsa, the Cathedral and Serralves publish no dog rule, so ring ahead rather than assume. The Port lodges in Gaia are the same. The bridges, the quays and every park are fine.

Can I fly to Porto with my dog in the cabin from the UK or Ireland?+

Only on TAP, which takes a dog in the cabin up to 8 kg including the carrier, in a soft carrier of no more than 45 by 30 by 23 cm. The low-cost airlines on the Porto routes don't take pets in the cabin. The alternative is the Brittany Ferries crossing to Santander or Bilbao and a four-hour drive.

Which Porto hotel gives dogs a welcome pack?+

Hospes Infante Sagres puts out a pet kit to take home plus bowls. The Largo has handmade bowls by a local designer, a bed and bathroom amenities. All four Torels provide a bed, water and a treat. Wine & Books provides bowls and a basket. The rest publish nothing.
