Where can my dog actually go?

Mykonos in August is loud, hot and packed, and that's hard on a dog. Mykonos in the shoulder months and the winter is a different island: empty beaches, quiet lanes in Chora and hotel staff with time for you. Nine hotels on our list take dogs here, and Daisy has stayed at one of them herself, Olvos Luxury Suites on the hill above Mykonos Town.

At Olvos the dog is in the suite and on the private pool terrace, and breakfast comes to the room, ordered on WhatsApp, rather than the dog going to a breakfast room. The staff greeted Daisy at the door every morning and were happy to push breakfast back half an hour. There's no pet fee and no published weight limit, but dogs are accepted on request only, so get the approval in writing before you pay. The hotel doesn't publish a rule for its restaurant, bar or lobby, so ask.

Beyond Olvos, what separates the hotels is where the dog can go, and most publish a weight limit and a request to tell them first and nothing more. Amyth of Mykonos Agios Stefanos is the one that lets dogs into a restaurant, the outdoor area of its pool restaurant, on a lead, crated or held, and hands over a dog tag, treats and waste bags at check-in. Cali Mykonos at Kalafatis has the clearest rules on the island and is clear the other way, no dogs at the pools, spa, gym or restaurants and never left alone in the room. Boheme, O by Myconian and Myconian Kyma don't take dogs at all. Olvos, Amyth, Kouros and Kalesma charge nothing, and Cali charges EUR 100 a stay. Katikies takes dogs up to 5 kg only, Cali up to 30 lb, about 13.6 kg, and Amyth up to 15 kg. For a big dog the picks are the two Semelis, Semeli Hotel in Chora and Semeli Coast on Merchia Beach, which both take dogs up to 30 kg in set room categories once the hotel has confirmed, and Kalesma sets no size limit in its selected suites.

The beaches are simpler than people fear. Greek law lets a dog on a lead onto any unorganised beach and into the sea. The organised beaches, the ones with sunbeds and a beach club, admit dogs only where the operator puts up a sign saying so, and on Mykonos that's most of the south coast: Paradise, Psarou, Platis Gialos, Ornos and Elia. Mykonos has no Blue Flag beach in 2026, so that rule doesn't come into it here. Agios Sostis, Fokos, Mersini and Kapari have no sunbeds and are the easy yes.

Two things to plan for. Olvos is a steep 15-minute walk down to town and a harder climb back, which is a lot for an older dog or a short-legged one in the heat. And getting here means a ferry, where dogs stay out of the indoor lounges, or a flight on which only a dog under 8 kg with its carrier can sit in the cabin.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
A dog on a lead can go onto any unorganised beach and into the sea. On an organised beach with sunbeds, a dog is only allowed where the operator has put up a sign saying so, which on Mykonos rules out most of the busy south coast in summer. Agios Sostis, Fokos, Mersini and Kapari have no sunbeds and are the ones to head for. There are no Blue Flag beaches on Mykonos in 2026. Early in the morning and after 7pm, when the sunbed concessions pack up, is when locals walk their dogs on the organised beaches.
Fees and weight limits
Free at Olvos, Amyth, Kouros and Kalesma, and EUR 100 a stay at Cali. Alissachni, Katikies and the two Semelis don't publish a fee, so ask. Katikies caps at 5 kg, Cali at 30 lb, about 13.6 kg, Amyth at 15 kg and both Semelis at 30 kg. Most of these take dogs only in set rooms and only once the hotel has confirmed, so get it in writing.
Ferries
Blue Star Ferries has kennels, a limited number of pet cabins and the open deck, where dogs must be muzzled and on a lead, and dogs don't go into the lounges, bars or restaurants. Seajets' fast boats are mostly enclosed, so a dog under 10 kg travels in a carrier and bigger dogs go in the kennels. Every dog needs its own ticket, which is free, declared when you book, and the pet cabins go first.
Getting around
KTEL Mykonos, the island bus, doesn't publish a rule on dogs, so plan on a small dog in a carrier and ask the driver. Taxis may refuse a dog. Olvos arranges transfers from the port and the airport, and a hire car is the easiest way to reach the quiet north coast beaches.
Delos
Delos is one of the Greek archaeological sites that admits dogs, on a lead no longer than 1 metre, with the dog's health booklet and poo bags, and larger dogs may need a muzzle. The boats leave from the old port in Chora, and the boat companies don't publish a pet rule, so ask at the kiosk first. There's no shade on the island, so go first thing.
Heat and hills
July and August average around 26 degrees with strong sun, and the meltemi wind makes it feel cooler than it is. Chora's lanes are whitewashed stone that holds the heat by the afternoon. Olvos sits on a slope with steps, and the walk back up from town is hard going for a dog with bad joints.
Getting there
Aegean, Olympic Air and Sky Express fly Athens to Mykonos and take a dog in the cabin up to 8 kg with its carrier, for EUR 35 domestic. Bigger dogs can go in the hold on the ATR turboprops, up to 25 kg with the crate on Sky Express. No airline flies a pet dog into the UK in the cabin, and Sky Express doesn't take pets on its London flights.
Vets
The Veterinary Center of Mykonos in Argirena, run by Dr Nikos Triantafyllou, speaks English and keeps an emergency mobile, +30 6944 372 535, with the clinic on +30 22890 22725. Vet and Groomer in Vrisi is open weekdays 9am to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm and Saturday mornings, on +30 22890 77365. Mykonos Vet in Klovas, on the Chora to Ano Mera road, is on +30 22890 27549 and Vet Care in Drafaki on +30 22890 28693. Ask your hotel which covers out of hours before you arrive.
Best walks
The hill paths around Olvos above Chora, then down into the lanes of Little Venice and out to the Kato Mili windmills early in the morning before the crowds. For sand, Agios Sostis on the north coast, a long unorganised beach with nothing built on it, and Fokos and Mersini in the north east, both unorganised and quiet, with Kapari on the west coast. In the off season the south coast beaches empty out and Daisy had them to herself.
When to go
April, May, late September and October, or the winter if you want the place to yourselves. Daisy came before the season started, and February is the month the hotel's own guidance picks for a dog, with empty beaches and quiet lanes, but many restaurants and some of the hotel's own facilities are closed then. June to early September brings full ferries, crowded organised beaches your dog can't use and hot stone underfoot, and July and August are the months to avoid. Most hotels here close over the winter, so check opening dates before you book a spring, late-autumn or winter trip.

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Mykonos

Is Mykonos dog friendly?+

More than its party reputation suggests, and far more out of season. A dog on a lead is welcome on any unorganised beach and in the sea, and nine hotels on our list take dogs, four of them free, including Olvos Luxury Suites, where Daisy stayed. The friction is the organised south coast beaches in summer, the heat, and ferries that keep dogs out of the lounges.

Can dogs go on the beach in Mykonos?+

Yes, on a lead, on any beach without sunbeds, and in the sea. Organised beaches only admit dogs where the operator puts up a sign allowing them. Agios Sostis, Fokos, Mersini and Kapari are unorganised and the best bets, and Mykonos has no Blue Flag beaches in 2026.

How much do Mykonos hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Olvos Luxury Suites, Amyth of Mykonos Agios Stefanos, Kouros and Kalesma. Cali Mykonos charges EUR 100 a stay as a cleaning fee. Alissachni, Katikies and the two Semelis don't publish a fee, so ask, and at Olvos get the approval confirmed in writing when you book.

Can I take my dog on the ferry to Mykonos?+

Yes. On Blue Star Ferries a dog goes in a kennel, a pet cabin or on the open deck, muzzled and on a lead, and never in the lounges. On Seajets' enclosed fast boats a dog under 10 kg travels in a carrier and a bigger dog goes in the kennels. The dog's ticket is free but has to be declared at booking, and pet cabins sell out.

Can I take my dog to Delos?+

The site admits dogs on a lead up to 1 metre, with the health booklet and poo bags. The boat operators from Mykonos don't publish a pet rule, so confirm at the old port kiosk before you buy. Go on the first boat, because there's no shade.

Can dogs go in restaurants in Mykonos?+

On terraces, usually yes, and indoors it's the owner's call. Most Mykonos tavernas are outdoors anyway. In the off season fewer places are open, and the Olvos concierge will tell you which ones are and which take dogs.

Which Mykonos hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+

Amyth of Mykonos Agios Stefanos allows dogs in the outdoor area of its pool restaurant, on a lead, crated or held. At Olvos breakfast comes to the suite rather than the dog going to a breakfast room. Cali Mykonos keeps dogs out of all its restaurants, and the other hotels don't publish a rule, so ask.

Where should I stay in Mykonos with a big dog?+

Semeli Hotel in Chora and Semeli Coast on Merchia Beach both take dogs up to 30 kg in set room categories, once the hotel has confirmed. Kalesma sets no size limit in its selected suites, and Olvos publishes none, so ask them to confirm your dog by size. The harder part is getting a big dog here: a dog over 8 kg can't fly in the cabin, so it's the hold on a turboprop or a kennel on the ferry.

When is the best time to visit Mykonos with a dog?+

Spring, autumn or winter. Daisy came before the season started and had the beaches to herself, and the hotel names February as the ideal month for a dog. Avoid July and August, when it's hot, the organised beaches are full and the ferries are packed.
