Where can my dog actually go?

Montreux is a lakefront town built for walking, which makes it an easy one for a dog. The quays run along Lake Geneva from the station towards Chillon, the trains up the mountain and the boats across the lake all take dogs with a ticket, and the Christmas market says outright that dogs are welcome. Our list carries ten hotels along the Riviera from Lausanne-Ouchy to Glion, and the one Daisy has stayed at is the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic. It's the most magical place we know at Christmas. Dogs come inside the restaurants, and in the daytime when you want to sit out, a lot of places put blankets on the chairs.

What makes the Suisse Majestic stand out is that the dog eats with you. Daisy was welcome in 45 Grill & Health, the hotel restaurant, and in the bar, the lobby and the outdoor areas, which is rare for a Belle Époque hotel of this standing. The one room that's closed to dogs is the breakfast room, and breakfast in your room is the answer. On Christmas morning Daisy had hers in bed with us. The hotel sets out a dog bed, a water bowl and a toy, and printed Daisy her own Montreux bus pass with her name on it.

Along the rest of the lake, the dividing line is the table. The Grand Hôtel du Lac in Vevey puts it in writing: dogs are welcome in La Véranda, La Marina and the Buddha-Bar Beach, on a short lead and on the floor rather than on the seats. The Royal Savoy in Ouchy lets calm, supervised dogs into its dining areas, everywhere except the breakfast buffet and the spa. Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is the other way round: dogs are fine in the lobby but not in any restaurant or bar, the spa or the pool, and the concierge will book a pet-sitter for dinner. Beau-Rivage Palace, the Trois Couronnes, the Angleterre, Château d'Ouchy, Victoria Glion and Le Mirador don't publish where a dog can go beyond the room, so ask before you book.

At the Suisse Majestic the fee is CHF 30 a night plus a one-off CHF 60 per stay, and the hotel takes one dog only. It publishes no weight limit, so a big dog is fine, but the balcony railings have gaps that could matter for a very small dog. There's no garden for toilet breaks, the lake promenade is across the road and that's where every walk starts. Elsewhere, Fairmont charges a one-off CHF 30 per dog per stay, the Royal Savoy and the Angleterre CHF 25 a dog, the Trois Couronnes CHF 30 a night, Le Mirador CHF 35 a night, and Beau-Rivage Palace and the Grand Hôtel du Lac CHF 50 a night, with the Grand Hôtel du Lac capping it at CHF 100 a stay. Château d'Ouchy takes only dogs under 3 kg. For one big dog the Suisse Majestic is the pick, and for two, Fairmont and Beau-Rivage both take two dogs of any size.

Plan around the sights. Château de Chillon doesn't admit dogs, only guide and assistance dogs, though it has kennels by the Bazaar. The Montreux Jazz Festival, 2 to 17 July 2027, keeps dogs out of its two paid stages and fills the quays, which is a lot for most dogs.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Dogs at the table
At palace level on this lake, dogs usually stay out of the restaurants unless the hotel says otherwise. Three do: the Suisse Majestic in 45 Grill & Health and the bar, the Grand Hôtel du Lac in its three restaurants, and the Royal Savoy in its dining areas. Fairmont keeps dogs out of every restaurant and bar. Breakfast is the gap. The Suisse Majestic keeps dogs out of the breakfast room and the Royal Savoy keeps them away from the buffet, so order breakfast to the room, and the Grand Hôtel du Lac doesn't say, so ask.
Fees and weight limits
CHF 25 a dog at the Royal Savoy and the Angleterre, CHF 30 a night at the Trois Couronnes, CHF 35 a night at Le Mirador, CHF 50 a night at Beau-Rivage Palace, and CHF 50 a night capped at CHF 100 a stay at the Grand Hôtel du Lac. Fairmont charges a one-off CHF 30 per dog per stay, and the Suisse Majestic CHF 30 a night plus CHF 60 per stay. Suisse Majestic, Fairmont, Beau-Rivage, the Angleterre and Victoria Glion publish no weight limit. Château d'Ouchy takes dogs under 3 kg only.
Trains
SBB and the MOB GoldenPass trains follow the Swiss rule. A dog up to 30 cm at the shoulder rides free in a bag or basket, a bigger one needs a second-class half-fare ticket or the Day Pass Dogs, CHF 25 and rising to CHF 27 from 13 December 2026. The dog sits under your seat, and dogs aren't allowed in SBB restaurant cars. MOB says dogs are allowed on all its trains, including the rack railway up the Rochers-de-Naye.
Buses
VMCV runs the buses along the Riviera. A dog up to 30 cm in a basket goes free, anything bigger or out of the basket needs a reduced-fare ticket or day card. Hotel guests get the Montreux Riviera Card for free public transport, and the Suisse Majestic printed Daisy her own bus pass.
Lake boats
CGN carries dogs on its Lake Geneva boats. A small dog up to 30 cm at the shoulder in a basket or bag travels free, others need a second-class half-fare ticket, and they can go in first class too. There's a CGN pier at Chillon, which makes the castle an easy boat trip.
Château de Chillon
Animals aren't allowed on the castle grounds, only guide and assistance dogs with papers and an approved harness. There are kennels by the Bazaar if you want to go in while the dog waits. The castle is open 9am to 7pm from April to September and 10am to 5pm from November to February, CHF 15 for adults, half price with the Riviera Card.
Montreux Noël
The Christmas market runs 20 November to 24 December 2026 along the quays, directly across from the Suisse Majestic. Dogs are welcome on a short lead, and the organisers themselves suggest avoiding the crowded weekends. Stalls open at 11am on weekdays and 10am at weekends.
Jazz Festival
The Montreux Jazz Festival is 2 to 17 July 2027 on the quays, the Place du Marché and the Casino. Dogs aren't allowed at the two paid stages. The free quay area publishes no dog rule, but it's packed and loud, so it's a week to walk early or go elsewhere.
Clean-up and breeds
Montreux fines CHF 150 for not picking up after a dog, and there are free bag dispensers on many bins. Vaud treats the Rottweiler, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier and their crosses, including the American Bully, as potentially dangerous dogs that need a permit. The canton doesn't say how that applies to a visiting dog, so ask the cantonal vet before you travel with one.
Vets
EVC Aigle, Chemin de la Biole 5 in Aigle, in the Rhône valley beyond Villeneuve, is the emergency vet for the Riviera, open every night and 24 hours at weekends and on holidays, with My-Vet in the same building by day. Freephone 058 122 22 22. Vetoadom Léman sends a vet to you around the clock on 021 552 75 75.
Best walks
The lake promenade straight across the road from the Suisse Majestic, which is the hotel's own recommendation for every walk, south along Lake Geneva past Territet to the Château de Chillon, then back on the CGN boat from the Chillon pier. North along the lake towards Clarens and Vevey for a longer day. The rack railway up to the Rochers-de-Naye for mountain paths high above the lake. From the Vevey hotels, the Quai Perdonnet and the Jardin du Rivage, past the fork in the water and the Chaplin statue, and on to La Tour-de-Peilz. From Ouchy, the Quai d'Ouchy and the Quai de Belgique west to the Parc du Denantou and the lawns of the Parc Olympique. Above the lake, the Gorges du Chauderon path links Glion and Montreux, and the Lavaux vineyard terraces lie between Lausanne and Vevey.
When to go
Late November to Christmas Eve is when Daisy went, with the market across the road and the quays lit up, a lovely time for a calm dog if you skip the weekends. May, June and September are the best months for long walks on the quays and boat days. Avoid the first half of July if your dog doesn't like crowds and noise, because the Jazz Festival takes over the waterfront from 2 to 17 July 2027. Chillon keeps shorter hours from November to February.

How do I get to Montreux with a dog?+

Geneva is the nearest airport, about 90 minutes away, with SBB trains to Montreux station, which is across the road from the Suisse Majestic. SWISS flies Dublin to Geneva direct with dogs in the cabin. Nothing flies a pet dog in the cabin into the UK or Ireland, so from Geneva to Dublin the cabin route is KLM via Amsterdam, and the UK return is by hold, car or ferry. The flights app has the detail.
