Where can my dog actually go?

Monaco is two square kilometres of marble, lifts and tunnels, and it is a stricter place for a dog than the palaces suggest. Dogs go on a lead everywhere in public, the sand at Larvotto is closed to them all year, the Japanese Garden and most of the small lawns carry no-dogs signs, and the big ticketed sights (the Oceanographic Museum, the state apartments at the Prince's Palace) don't admit a pet unless it fits in a small bag. What Monaco does well is the walking: the Larvotto promenade, the harbour at Port Hercule and the Casino gardens all take a dog on a lead, and the Cap d'Ail coastal path, where dogs can get into the sea, starts at the western border. Five hotels on our list take dogs, all of them on the Monte-Carlo side of the country.

The thing that separates them is where the dog is allowed to sit once you are inside. Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo lets dogs into Pavyllon, its one-Michelin-star dining room, indoors and on the terrace, and into Le Limun bar. Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo takes dogs indoors at Le Bar Américain and at the Cédric Grolet boutique and tea room, but not at Le Grill or Em Sherif. Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo seats dogs at the Lobby Bar restaurant for lunch and dinner and is the only one with a real dog programme, a bed, a bowl with treats, an in-room pet menu and a pet concierge. The Fairmont Monte Carlo is the clear no: dogs sleep in the room and go nowhere else, not the restaurants, the bars, the spa, the gym or the pool. Le Méridien Beach Plaza publishes no position on its restaurants at all, and keeps dogs off its private beach and pool.

Fees are the highest on the coast. EUR 25 a night at Le Méridien, EUR 50 at the Fairmont, EUR 60 a day at the Hermitage and Hôtel de Paris, EUR 70 at the Métropole. Every hotel takes one dog per room. The weight caps are tight: 6 kg at the Métropole, 12 kg at Le Méridien, 15 kg at the Hermitage and Hôtel de Paris. The Fairmont publishes no cap, which makes it the only option for a dog over 15 kg, and it is the hotel where the dog gets the least. None of the five say a dog can be left alone in the room, and the two Société des Bains de Mer palaces say plainly it can't.

Two things to plan around. Dogs need their own ticket on the Monaco buses and a muzzle on the train back to Nice, and the whole principality shuts down for the Grand Prix in late spring, when the hotels on Casino Square and Avenue des Spélugues sit inside the circuit and the Palace and the Exotic Garden close their doors.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Leads and lawns
Dogs are on a lead everywhere in public in Monaco, no exceptions. The Japanese Garden on the Larvotto side is signed no dogs, and so are most of the small grassy patches around the principality. Fouling is fined at EUR 300, and there are free bag dispensers in every district, with a dog area on the edge of Larvotto.
Larvotto beach
The beach itself is closed to dogs all year. You can walk the promenade and the rebuilt Larvotto complex on a lead, you just can't take the dog onto the sand or into the water. Le Méridien's private beach next door is off limits to dogs too, and so are the hotel pools.
Where the dog can swim
Cross the western border into Cap d'Ail. Pointe des Douaniers Est, a pebble cove behind Le Cabanon restaurant on the Chemin des Douaniers coastal path, takes dogs, and the beach under La Pinède is set aside for them. Eastwards, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the western end of Golfe Bleu beach by the station is open to dogs and the narrow Plage de la Piscine is reserved for them.
Buses
CAM runs the Monaco buses. A small animal in a closed bag or basket up to 45 cm travels free. A dog on a lead needs its own fare, EUR 2 for a paper ticket on board or EUR 1.50 in the Monapass app, and must follow the principality's public rules, which CAM says include muzzling requirements. The two lines that matter are 1 and 2 for the Rock and the Palace, and 6 for Larvotto.
Train to Nice and Menton
Monaco-Monte-Carlo station is underground with lifts to the Condamine and to Monte-Carlo. On the regional ZOU trains along the coast every dog pays a flat EUR 5 whatever its size, a small one travels in a closed bag or basket and a larger one goes muzzled and on a lead at your feet. Nice is around 25 minutes, Menton around 10, Ventimiglia about 20. The ZOU coastal buses only take animals under 10 kg, for EUR 2.50 paid to the driver.
The sights
The Oceanographic Museum admits only certified guide and assistance dogs, no pets and no emotional support animals, and offers to refer you to a kennel. The Prince's Palace state apartments, open 30 March to 15 October, take a pet only if it stays in a small bag, EUR 13 an adult. The Casino de Monte-Carlo publishes no dog rule and the Exotic Garden, reopened on 30 March 2026 after six years of works, doesn't publish one either, so ring ahead for both. The Palace square, the Rock's lanes and the Casino gardens are all fine on a lead.
Dogs at breakfast
Not one of the five publishes a breakfast rule. At the Hermitage and Hôtel de Paris the named rooms where dogs are welcome are Pavyllon, Le Limun and Le Bar Américain, and at the Métropole the Lobby Bar is listed for lunch and dinner only. Ask by name when you book. The Fairmont is a firm no at every outlet.
Grand Prix
The street circuit runs past the Hermitage, Hôtel de Paris, the Métropole and the Fairmont, which sits over the hairpin. During race week the roads close, the noise is constant from Thursday to Sunday, and the Palace tours and the Exotic Garden shut. The next Formula 1 Grand Prix is 3 to 6 June 2027, with the E-Prix on 1 and 2 May 2027 and the Historic Grand Prix in early May 2028. Bring a dog another week.
Vets
Monaco has three clinics: Clinique Vétérinaire de Fontvieille at 22 quai Jean-Charles Rey (+377 92 05 74 77), Clinique Vétérinaire Sainte-Dévote at 22 boulevard Princesse Charlotte near Casino Square (+377 93 25 62 62), and Clinique Vétérinaire Athéna at 19 avenue Crovetto Frères (+377 93 25 05 04). None publishes a 24-hour service. For nights and weekends the Clinique Saint-Hubert in Beausoleil, just over the border above the Métropole, runs an on-call line on +33 6 60 61 36 24.
Best walks
The Larvotto promenade from the Japanese Garden gate along Avenue Princesse Grace to the Grimaldi Forum, on the paving not the sand. The Casino gardens and the Jardins des Boulingrins down from the Métropole to Place du Casino, then the terraces above the harbour to Port Hercule and round the quays of the Condamine. Up the Rampe Major to the Rock for the Palace square and the lanes of Monaco-Ville. For sea and grass, the Chemin des Douaniers coastal path from Cap d'Ail towards Plage Mala, where the dog can get in.
When to go
April to June and September to October, when the terraces at Pavyllon, Le Limun and the Lobby Bar are open and the promenade is walkable at midday. July and August are hot, humid and crowded, with hot paving on the Larvotto side and no dog-friendly water inside the principality to cool off in. Avoid the Grand Prix week in late May or early June entirely, and the Monaco Yacht Show in late September fills the harbour hotels. Winter is mild and quiet, but the Palace tours are closed from mid-October to the end of March.

Dog-friendly hotels in Monaco

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Monaco

Is Monaco dog friendly?+

Partly. Five hotels on our list take dogs, and three of them, the Hermitage, Hôtel de Paris and the Métropole, let a dog into a real restaurant or bar. Against that, Larvotto beach is closed to dogs all year, the Oceanographic Museum and the Palace apartments don't admit pets, dogs are on a lead everywhere and the weight caps run from 6 kg to 15 kg. It is a good city for a small, calm dog who likes a terrace and a promenade.

Which Monaco hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, indoors and on the terrace at Pavyllon by Yannick Alléno and at Le Limun bar. Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, indoors at Le Bar Américain and at the Cédric Grolet boutique and tea room. Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo, at the Lobby Bar restaurant for lunch and dinner. The Fairmont keeps dogs out of every restaurant and bar, and Le Méridien Beach Plaza publishes no rule.

How much do Monaco hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 25 a night at Le Méridien Beach Plaza, EUR 50 at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, EUR 60 a day at the Hermitage and Hôtel de Paris, and EUR 70 at the Métropole. All five take one dog per room. Monaco's city tax of EUR 4.69 per person per night is separate.

Where should I stay in Monaco with a big dog?+

Nowhere on the list is built for one. The Métropole caps at 6 kg, Le Méridien at 12 kg, and the Hermitage and Hôtel de Paris at 15 kg. The Fairmont publishes no weight limit, so it is the only hotel that can take a dog over 15 kg, but the dog stays in the room and out of every restaurant, bar, spa and pool. Ring the Fairmont first to confirm before booking a large breed.

Can dogs go on Larvotto beach?+

No, not at any time of year. Dogs are allowed on the promenade and around the Larvotto complex on a lead, and there is a dog toilet area at the edge, but not on the sand or in the sea. The nearest beaches that take dogs are in Cap d'Ail to the west, Pointe des Douaniers Est and the beach under La Pinède, and in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to the east, the western end of Golfe Bleu and Plage de la Piscine.

Can I take my dog on the bus in Monaco?+

Yes. On CAM buses a small animal in a closed bag or basket up to 45 cm rides free, and a dog on a lead needs its own ticket, EUR 2 on board or EUR 1.50 in the Monapass app, and must comply with the principality's public rules, including muzzling where those apply.

Can I take my dog on the train from Monaco to Nice?+

Yes. The coastal trains are ZOU regional services and charge a flat EUR 5 per animal whatever its size. Small dogs travel in a closed bag or basket, bigger dogs go muzzled and on a lead at your feet. Category 1 and 2 dogs under the French list aren't carried. Nice is about 25 minutes, Menton about 10.

Can dogs go into the Casino de Monte-Carlo or the Prince's Palace?+

The Palace state apartments take a pet only if it stays in a small bag for the whole visit, otherwise only guide and assistance dogs. The Oceanographic Museum admits guide and assistance dogs only. The Casino publishes no pet rule, so ask at the door or leave the dog with someone. The Palace square and the streets of the Rock are fine on a lead.

Which Monaco hotel has the best dog welcome pack?+

The Métropole. It puts a bed in the room, a bowl with treats, an in-room pet menu, offers a pet concierge, grooming through a partner salon and a pet photography session. Hôtel de Paris puts bowls in the room. The Hermitage, the Fairmont and Le Méridien advertise nothing in the room for a dog.

How do I get to Monaco with a dog from the UK or Ireland?+

The airport is Nice Côte d'Azur, 30 km west. No scheduled airline flying Nice to the UK or Ireland carries a pet dog in the cabin, so most owners fly into Nice via a continental hub, drive, or take the train down through Paris. From Nice the coastal train takes about 25 minutes with a EUR 5 dog ticket. The Monacair helicopter line does the airport in 7 minutes from EUR 195 a seat but publishes no pet policy, so ring before you book it.
