What happens when you get there

Beaches in summer

Each council sets its own rule, but the pattern is the same across the island: from roughly May to the end of September dogs are banned from the sandy beaches unless the beach is a designated dog beach, and fines are issued. The designated ones are Es Carnatge and Cala Gamba in Palma, Punta des Marroig at Palmanova and Cala dels Gats at Costa de la Calma in Calvià, Cala Blanca in Andratx, Llenaire at Port de Pollença and Na Patana at Santa Margalida. Most are rocky rather than sandy. Outside the summer months most councils tolerate a leashed dog on the sand, and Es Carnatge is open all year.

Buses and trains

On the EMT Palma city buses a dog rides on a lead with a muzzle for a EUR 0.30 ticket, or free in a carrier, on every line. On the TIB island buses that link Palma to Sóller, Alcúdia and the rest of the island, a dog travels only in a closed carrier on your lap or at your feet, one carrier per person, since 7 June 2026. The Sóller train and tram take animals only in a carrier. The SFM train and the Palma metro have their own published pet rule, so check it before you plan on the train with a dog that won't fit a carrier.

The sights

Palma Cathedral admits guide dogs only. The Drach caves at Porto Cristo admit guide dogs only. Bellver Castle and the Cartuja in Valldemossa don't publish a rule, so ring ahead. The good news is that Mallorca's best days out are outdoors anyway: the old town, the Passeig Marítim, the Tramuntana villages and the coastal paths take a dog without asking.

Dogs at the restaurant

Aethos is the only hotel on the list that says yes to dogs in its restaurants and at breakfast. Nobis allows a small dog under the table at NOI. Hospes Maricel, Cap Vermell, Bendinat, Sarena, the Iberostar and La Residencia are a clear no in the dining rooms. Everyone else publishes nothing either way, so ask by name. Terraces in the villages and along the seafront are generally relaxed about a leashed dog, indoors is up to the owner.

Weight limits

Cap Vermell stops at 8 kg. Aethos, Castillo Son Vida, Bendinat, La Residencia, Sarena, Zoëtry, the Iberostar and Nobis all stop at or under 10 kg. The St. Regis takes 11 kg, the Four Seasons 11.5 kg, Jumeirah and Hospes Maricel 12 kg, the Sheraton 18 kg, Can Bordoy 25 kg, Hacienda Son Antem 30 kg. Kimpton Aysla publishes no limit. Mandarin Oriental and Son Bunyola publish no figure, so confirm.

Free at Kimpton Aysla, Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra and Son Bunyola. EUR 25 a night at Aethos, EUR 30 a night at Hacienda Son Antem, EUR 40 a night at Hospes Maricel and the Iberostar, EUR 45 at the Sheraton, EUR 50 at Sarena and Zoëtry, EUR 65 at the Four Seasons, EUR 75 a night at Castillo Son Vida and the St. Regis. Per stay: EUR 60 at Nobis, EUR 75 at Can Bordoy, EUR 100 at La Residencia, EUR 150 at Cap Vermell. Bendinat and Jumeirah charge but don't publish the figure.

Two dogs

Kimpton Aysla takes several. Hacienda Son Antem, the Iberostar Albufera Park, La Residencia and the St. Regis take two. Aethos, Can Bordoy, Castillo Son Vida, the Four Seasons, Nobis, Sarena and the Sheraton take one.

Getting there

Palma airport (PMI) is 15 minutes from the city. None of the UK or Irish airlines on the Palma routes carry a dog in the cabin, so most people fly via mainland Spain or drive to Barcelona, Valencia or Dénia and take the Baleària ferry, which has pet cabins where the dog stays with you, pet seats for animals under 8 kg in a carrier, and kennels with deck time.

Best walks

The Passeig Marítim and the Parc de la Mar under the cathedral in Palma, the Bellver woods above the city, the Calvià coastal path from Portals Nous to Peguera, the S'Albufera wetland trails behind Playa de Muro, the Son Marroig path and the walk down to Cala Deià from Deià, the olive terraces above Banyalbufar, and Es Carnatge for a dog beach all year.

When to go

Mid-September to June. The sandy beaches reopen to dogs in most councils once the summer ban lifts around the end of September, the Tramuntana is walkable again and the villages are quieter. Spring is the same in reverse and the island is green. July and August mean beach bans nearly everywhere, midday heat above 35°C and crowded resorts, so if you must come then, stay in the hills at Deià or Banyalbufar or near the official dog beaches in Calvià and Pollença.
