Where can my dog actually go?

Lake Como works for a dog because the lake itself is the transport. The public boats run by Navigazione Laghi take dogs on a lead with a muzzle in your bag, a dog under 50 cm at the shoulder travels free, and the gardens every visitor comes for, Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi and Villa del Balbianello, all admit a dog on a lead. Thirteen hotels on our list take dogs, from a 19th-century lakefront hotel in Como old town that charges nothing to Il Sereno at EUR 250 a stay.

What separates them is where the dog is allowed to be. Grand Hotel Tremezzo publishes the clearest rule on the lake: the dog goes everywhere except the La Terrazza restaurant, the bars, the pool areas and the spa, with a dog kit in the room on arrival and dog-walking or dog-sitting through the concierge. Hotel Villa Flori in Como has had dogs at breakfast and at dinner, which no other hotel here can say. The Sheraton is clear the other way: the dog is not in the restaurants, the bar, the breakfast room or the pool. Villa d'Este takes small dogs on request but keeps them out of the restaurants, the bars, the terrace, the pools and the Sporting Club, so the estate's gardens on a lead are the whole of the access story there. Most of the five-stars, Villa Serbelloni, Mandarin Oriental, the EDITION, Il Sereno and Passalacqua, publish a room rule but no rule for the restaurant, bar or breakfast, so ask by name when you book.

Fees run from nothing at Albergo Terminus, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa Flori and Passalacqua, through EUR 20 a day at Palazzo Albricci Peregrini, EUR 30 a night at the Sheraton and EUR 40 a night at Grand Hotel Victoria in Menaggio, to EUR 60 a stay at Villa Serbelloni, EUR 70 a day at Mandarin Oriental and EUR 250 a stay at Il Sereno. Watch the weight caps. Il Sereno stops at 12 kg, Mandarin Oriental and the EDITION at 15 kg, the Sheraton at 18 kg and Villa Serbelloni at 25 kg, and Tremezzo says small dogs preferred. Terminus, Villa Flori, Passalacqua and Grand Hotel Victoria take dogs of any size, and Victoria is the only hotel on the list that takes two.

Two things catch people out. Lake Como is 46 km long and Bellagio is about an hour by boat from Como town, so decide first whether you want the town (Terminus, Villa Flori, Palazzo Venezia, Palazzo Albricci Peregrini, the Sheraton), the western shore just north of it (Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Passalacqua in Moltrasio, Mandarin Oriental in Blevio, Il Sereno in Torno), or the central lake (Tremezzo, the EDITION in Cadenabbia, Victoria in Menaggio, Serbelloni in Bellagio). And the season is short: Tremezzo opens mid-March to the end of October, Victoria is closed from November to February, Mandarin Oriental closes from about November to April, and Villa d'Este is seasonal too.

What happens when you get there

Boats and ferries
Navigazione Laghi runs the public boats, the fast services and the car ferries between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio. Dogs travel on a lead no longer than 1.5 m and you must carry a muzzle, rigid or soft. A dog under 50 cm at the shoulder travels free, a bigger dog pays the reduced fare with no supplement on the fast services. Dogs can't take a seat, and the captain can refuse a dog if the boat is packed, which happens on summer weekends.
Trains from Milan
Trenord regional trains to Como take dogs on a lead with a muzzle, free within Lombardy, but not on weekdays between 7 and 9.30 in the morning or between 17.30 and 19.30. Small pets in a carrier up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm follow the same hours. If you land at Malpensa on a weekday, time the transfer around those windows or take a car.
The Brunate funicular
The funicular from Como up to Brunate is run by ATM and takes dogs at EUR 3.50 a ride on top of your own EUR 3.60 single. Dogs must wear a muzzle on board, not just carry one. It runs from 6 in the morning to midnight and the ride is seven minutes.
Buses
ASF Autolinee, the Como bus operator, only takes a small dog, on a lead and muzzled or in a carrier, with a ticket at the normal fare. There is no published rule for a medium or large dog, so plan on the boats or a car for anything bigger than a lap dog.
The villa gardens
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina admits dogs to the garden on a lead, adult ticket EUR 17.50, open 10 to 7 from 20 March to 18 October 2026 with shorter hours to 8 November. The Villa Melzi gardens in Bellagio take dogs on a lead with bags and let them into the museum and chapel too, EUR 10, open daily 10 to 7. Villa del Balbianello in Lenno takes dogs in the garden on a lead but not inside the villa, park ticket EUR 15, booking compulsory, open regularly from mid-March with only listed days in winter.
Dogs at breakfast
Rare here. Villa Flori has had dogs at breakfast and dinner. The Sheraton is a clear no for the restaurants, the bar and the breakfast room. Tremezzo keeps dogs out of La Terrazza and the bars but is otherwise open. Nobody else on the list publishes a breakfast rule, so ask by name.
Never left alone
Villa Serbelloni, Mandarin Oriental, the EDITION and Il Sereno all say the dog cannot be left unattended in the room. That rules out a long lunch at a restaurant that won't take the dog, so check the dining rule at the same time. Tremezzo and Passalacqua offer dog-sitting through the concierge, Passalacqua for a fee.

The Lungo Lario promenade in Como from Piazza Cavour out to Villa Olmo and on towards Cernobbio, the Como to Torno lakeside footpath, the Greenway del Lago di Como through Tremezzina and Cadenabbia with Villa Carlotta's gardens on the way, the Bellagio shore path to Punta Spartivento and the Villa Melzi gardens, the Menaggio lakefront and Via Calvi, and the walk up from Lenno to Villa del Balbianello, 1 km on gravel or 2.5 km by the trekking route.
When to go
Late April to June and September to mid-October. The gardens are open, the boats are on the summer timetable to 4 October, and the heat hasn't arrived. July and August are hot and humid on the shore and the boats fill up, which is when the captain can turn a dog away. From November most of the lake shuts: Tremezzo closes at the end of October, Mandarin Oriental from about November to April, Victoria from November to February, Villa Carlotta after 8 November, and the boats drop to a reduced timetable. The Como town hotels stay open all year, so winter is a town break, not a lake one.

Can I take my dog to Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello?+

Yes to the gardens of both, on a lead. Villa Carlotta is open 20 March to 18 October with full hours and to 8 November with shorter ones, EUR 17.50. Balbianello needs a booking, park ticket EUR 15, and dogs don't go inside the villa. Villa Melzi in Bellagio goes further and lets dogs into its museum and chapel.

Can dogs go on the train from Milan to Como?+

On Trenord trains yes, on a lead and muzzled, free within Lombardy, but not on weekdays from 7 to 9.30 or 17.30 to 19.30. Outside those windows the regional from Milano Centrale or Cadorna is the easy way in.

Should I stay in Como town or in Bellagio with a dog?+

Como town if you want to walk out of the door, use the funicular and reach everything on foot, and it's where the free, any-size hotels are. The central lake at Tremezzina, Cadenabbia and Bellagio is where the gardens and the Greenway are and where Tremezzo's access rule sits, but Bellagio is about an hour by boat from Como and the hotels there cap weight and close for winter.
