Where can my dog actually go?

Kitzbühel is an easy town to arrive in with a dog. The old town is small and car-light, the Hahnenkamm gondola starts at the edge of it, and Tirol expects dogs on lifts, buses and trains as long as they wear a lead and a muzzle. There's a free, fenced 3,200 m² dog meadow at the Reitherkreuzung next to the Gieringer Weiher, a small natural lake where dogs are welcome to swim. Fifteen hotels on our list take dogs, in town, at the Schwarzsee, in Reith and Kirchberg, and over in Going am Wilden Kaiser.

What separates them is how far the dog gets past the bedroom door, and here that usually stops short of the dining room. Most hotels keep dogs out of the main restaurant and offer a Stube, a lobby table or a winter garden instead. The clear yes in town is Hotel Rasmushof at the foot of the Hahnenkamm, where dogs eat in the restaurant and only the winter garden at breakfast is off limits. In Going, Vitalhotel Sonnenhof seats dogs at every meal at a reserved table in the winter garden or the Bauernstüberl, and the Stanglwirt takes them in the old Gasthof Stangl, the Zirbenstube at Leni's and the Tenne bar until 8pm. The Alpenhotel am Schwarzsee does dinner with the dog in the See-Stube when there's room, and the Schweizerhof by the Hahnenkammbahn lays a table for you and the dog in the lobby by arrangement. Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof takes dogs in every room, in the lobby and on the terrace, and puts out bowls, a bed, blankets, a lead and waste bags, but keeps them out of the restaurants and breakfast. So do Weisses Roessl, the Kitzhof, the Tiefenbrunner, the Metzgerwirt and Lisi.

Fees run from EUR 15 per dog per night at ERIKA and EUR 15 a day at the Metzgerwirt to EUR 45 at the Stanglwirt and the Schlosshotel, where the charge stops after five days at EUR 225. In between, Sonnenhof charges EUR 20 a day with final cleaning included, Rasmushof EUR 22, the Kitzhof EUR 25 a night, the Tiefenbrunner EUR 25 to 28, Tennerhof, Das Lebenberg and Lisi EUR 30 a day, the Alpenhotel EUR 35 a night and Weisses Roessl EUR 40 a night, food not included anywhere. Almost nobody publishes a weight limit. The Alpenhotel am Schwarzsee is the pick for a big dog: it takes two dogs up to 45 kg, bigger dogs or more of them on request, has garden suites with a fenced garden, and the lake circuit starts at the door. Tennerhof, with dogs in every room and a large garden, is the five-star alternative. Tennerhof, Weisses Roessl and Rasmushof all arrange dog-sitting, EUR 25 at Tennerhof. Tennerhof's Luxury Chalets don't take dogs, even though the main house does.

Check dates before you plan anything. Tennerhof and Weisses Roessl both close between seasons, Tennerhof in spring and autumn. The Hahnenkamm races take over the town from 18 to 24 January 2027, with the Super-G, downhill and slalom on 22 to 24 January, which is a hard week for a nervous dog. Going, home to Sonnenhof and the Stanglwirt, is a separate village on the Wilder Kaiser side, so treat it as a base of its own rather than a Kitzbühel address. And the Goldener Greif in the old town doesn't take dogs at all.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Lead and muzzle
Since January 2020 every built-up area in Tirol has had a lead-or-muzzle rule, and on public transport, near schools and at kindergartens a dog needs both. Carry a muzzle even if you never use it. Bag and bin everything, Tirol fines fouling up to EUR 1,820.
Cable cars
The Bergbahn Kitzbühel lifts carry dogs on a lead and muzzled. A dog fare isn't published, so ask at the valley station. In 2026 the Hahnenkammbahn runs 1 to 31 May and 15 June to 1 November, the Hornbahn 23 May to 11 October. The Streif start house at the top of the Hahnenkamm is open to walk up to most of the year.
Cows on the Alm
The summer trails on the Hahnenkamm and the Horn cross grazed pasture with cows, sheep and goats. The lift company's advice is to keep calm, keep your distance, cross quickly and keep the dog on a short lead.
Swimming
The Gieringer Weiher welcomes dogs and sits next to the fenced dog meadow at the Reitherkreuzung, free and open round the clock. The Schwarzsee lido is a paid bathing area run by the Alpenhotel and publishes no dog rule, so walk the shore path instead. Tirol's indoor pools, including the Aquarena, don't take dogs. Further out, the Walchsee has a dog bathing spot at its east-shore lido, and the Pillersee is the other lake dog owners drive to, both about 40 minutes away.
Trains and buses
Kitzbühel has three stations, Kitzbühel, Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm by the gondola and Kitzbühel Schwarzsee. ÖBB charges a flat EUR 2 for a dog up to 98 km and 10 percent of the full fare beyond, lead and muzzle on, dog on the floor. Regional VVT buses carry dogs free, again with lead and muzzle.
Dogs at breakfast
A yes at Sonnenhof in Going, at a reserved table, and at Rasmushof everywhere except the winter garden. A no at Tennerhof, the Alpenhotel, the Kitzhof, the Tiefenbrunner, the Schweizerhof, the Metzgerwirt and Lisi. Unknown at Weisses Roessl, where breakfast is served in the lobby, so ask before you book.
Fees
EUR 15 at ERIKA and the Metzgerwirt, EUR 20 at Sonnenhof with final cleaning included, EUR 22 at Rasmushof, EUR 25 at the Kitzhof and EUR 25 to 28 at the Tiefenbrunner. EUR 30 at Tennerhof, Das Lebenberg and Lisi, EUR 35 at the Alpenhotel, EUR 40 at Weisses Roessl and EUR 45 at the Stanglwirt and the Schlosshotel, which stops charging after five days. All per dog per day or night, food not included.
Dog services
KitzDog and KB Dogs offer dog-sitting, and there's a dog groomer in Kitzbühel. For food, SPAR, Billa and M-Preis stock it in town, and the nearest Fressnapf is in St. Johann in Tirol, about 9 km away.
Christmas market
The Kitzbüheler Advent runs 18 November to 27 December 2026 in the Hinterstadt and the Stadtpark, Wednesday to Sunday 2pm to 8pm, plus 8, 21, 22 and 24 to 26 December. It's compact, and with the Tirol muzzle rule in crowded places a quiet early visit suits a dog best.
Vets
Tierarztpraxis Briem-Feichtner, Ehrenbachgasse 48 in town, +43 5356 62370, small animals, weekday mornings and most late afternoons. Out of hours, from Saturday noon to Monday 7am and on public holidays, the Tirol small-animal emergency line is +43 676 885 088 2444 and puts you through to the practice on duty.
Best walks
The fenced dog meadow and the Gieringer Weiher at the Reitherkreuzung for a free run and a swim. The shore path round the Schwarzsee, flat and easy on a rest day. The valley paths from the Hornbahn at Tennerhof, and the Hahnenkamm gondola from the old town up to the Streif start house and the summer trails, on a short lead where cattle graze. The Alpenblumengarten on the Kitzbüheler Horn is reached from the same lift.
When to go
June to mid-October for the lifts and the high trails, when the Hornbahn and Hahnenkammbahn both run. Late summer is when the Schwarzsee is at its warmest. Winter works for a dog who likes snow, but skip Hahnenkamm race week, 18 to 24 January 2027, when the town is packed and loud. Late November and December bring the Advent market. Both hotels close between seasons, spring and autumn at Tennerhof, and the lifts pause in early June, so check dates before booking either shoulder.

Hotel Rasmushof, in the restaurant at every meal except the winter garden at breakfast. The Alpenhotel am Schwarzsee does dinner in the See-Stube when there's room. Tennerhof, Weisses Roessl and most of the rest keep dogs out of their restaurants.

Does the Goldener Greif in Kitzbühel allow dogs?+

No. The Goldener Greif doesn't take pets. In the old town, Weisses Roessl and the Tiefenbrunner both take dogs, and Rasmushof is five minutes' walk from the centre.

Can dogs go on the Hahnenkamm cable car?+

Yes, on a lead and wearing a muzzle, which is the rule Bergbahn Kitzbühel prints on its summer map. The company doesn't publish a dog fare, so ask at the valley station. In summer 2026 the Hahnenkammbahn runs 1 to 31 May and 15 June to 1 November.

Where should I stay in Kitzbühel with a big dog?+

The Alpenhotel am Schwarzsee, which takes two dogs up to 45 kg, bigger on request, has garden suites with a fenced garden and the lake circuit from the door. Tennerhof publishes no weight limit, takes dogs in every room and has a large garden. Weisses Roessl publishes no limit either, but dogs go only in selected rooms that must be requested, so name the breed and weight when you book.

Where can my dog swim in Kitzbühel?+

The Gieringer Weiher, a small natural lake that welcomes dogs, right next to the free fenced dog meadow at the Reitherkreuzung. The Schwarzsee lido is a paid bathing area that publishes no dog rule, and Tirol's pools don't take dogs.

Can my dog come to breakfast in Kitzbühel hotels?+

Do dogs need a muzzle in Kitzbühel?+

On public transport and cable cars, yes, together with a lead. In built-up areas across Tirol a dog needs either a lead or a muzzle, and a muzzle is also expected near schools and kindergartens. Carry one on every outing.

How do I get to Kitzbühel with a dog from the UK or Ireland?+

Salzburg is 81 km, Innsbruck 96 km and Munich 127 km. Lufthansa flies Dublin to Munich direct with dogs in the cabin, then it's rail via Kufstein or Wörgl. No airline flies a pet dog in the cabin into the UK or Ireland, so the way home is the hold, a hub route, or the car and a ferry. The flights app has the detail.
