Bilbao is an easy city with a dog. The centre is flat along the Ría, the riverside path runs from the Guggenheim past the Zubizuri bridge to the Casco Viejo, and the Parque de Doña Casilda has a fenced area where a dog can come off the lead. Ten hotels on our list take dogs, led by Hotel Ercilla, an Autograph Collection four-star in Abando that Daisy has stayed at herself.
At the Ercilla the dog is in the room, the lobby and the lounge, where drinks and snacks are served. The main restaurant and the bar are a no, and the hotel doesn't publish a rule on breakfast, so ask when you book. What it does well is the welcome: a bed, food and water bowls and treats were brought to the room shortly after Daisy arrived, and the staff learned her name. It's EUR 20 a night, one dog, and the hotel publishes no weight limit. Elsewhere the hotels split on where the dog can go. Hotel Tayko, on the Ría in the Casco Viejo, is the one to book if you want the dog at the table: dogs come to reception, the lifts and the brunch run by Martín Berasategui's team, though not into the Ola restaurant. The Artist, opposite the Guggenheim, lets dogs into the lobby and onto The Gallery terrace, and you can leave the dog in the room if reception has your number. Hotel Carlton on Plaza Moyúa allows the lobby and corridors on a lead but never leaves the dog alone in the room. Spirit Hotel Gran Bilbao is the clear no, room only, with every shared space off limits.
Fees run from EUR 20 a night at the Ercilla, through EUR 25 at Tayko when you book direct, Catalonia Gran Vía with a EUR 200 deposit, Sercotel Ayala and Sercotel Coliseo, to EUR 35 at ILUNION San Mamés and EUR 50 at The Artist and the Carlton. Hesperia and Spirit don't publish a fee. The weight caps are where it narrows. The Artist stops at 5 kg, the Carlton at 10 kg, Hesperia at 15 kg and Catalonia and the two Sercotels at 20 kg. ILUNION San Mamés takes any size, with a welcome kit, a toy and treats, which makes it the pick for a big dog, and Tayko sets no limit either.
The thing to plan around is transport. Until 15 October 2026, Metro Bilbao lines 1 and 2 only take a dog under 8 kg, in your arms or in a carrier, and Bizkaibus and Bilbobus take small dogs in a closed carrier only. From 15 October bigger dogs can ride the metro, muzzled, on a lead under 50 cm, off peak, and never on the escalators. The trams, Euskotren and metro line 3 already take a dog of any size on a lead.
The Guggenheim itself doesn't admit dogs, only assistance dogs. Jeff Koons' Puppy and Louise Bourgeois' spider Maman stand outside it, so the photo is easy. And the Bizkaia beaches are a summer trap: from June to September dogs are on a handful of named beaches only, and only from the evening to early morning.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Metro
- Metro Bilbao lines 1 and 2 take a dog under 8 kg in your arms or in a closed carrier. From 15 October 2026 a bigger dog can travel too, muzzled, on a fixed lead no longer than 50 cm, one per person, never in the first or last carriage and never on the escalators, so use the lifts. Dogs over 8 kg are kept off at 7 to 10am, 1 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm on weekdays, on Friday and Saturday nights, and on San Mamés match days and during Aste Nagusia.
- Buses, trams and trains
- Bizkaibus and Bilbobus take small dogs in a closed carrier only, and Bizkaibus sets the limit at 8 kg. The Bilbao tram, Euskotren and metro line 3 take a dog of any size on a lead. Renfe local trains take a dog in a carrier, or on a lead with a muzzle, one per passenger.
- Artxanda and the Bizkaia Bridge
- The Artxanda funicular carries dogs on a short lead in its own compartment, and it's worth having a muzzle with you. At the top is the viewpoint over the whole city and the start of the hill paths. The Bizkaia Bridge gondola at Portugalete takes dogs up to 40 kg on a lead or in a carrier, and bigger dogs in the central section.
- Beaches
- From June to September dogs are kept off most Bizkaia beaches in the day. Ten named beaches take dogs in the evening and early morning: Ereaga and Arrigunaga in Getxo and Arrietara, Atxabiribil and La Salvaje in Sopela from 8pm to 9.30am, Plentzia and Laidatxu and Hondartzape in Mundaka from 9pm to 6am, Muriola in Barrika 8pm to 6am, and Aritzatxu in Bermeo 8pm to 11am. From October to May a longer list, including Sopela, Gorliz, Bakio and Laga, takes dogs at any hour. Fines run from EUR 300 to EUR 1,500.
- Parks and off-lead areas
- Bilbao has fenced dog areas, called txakurguneak, in ten parks including Doña Casilda, Etxebarria, Europa and Miribilla. A dog can run off the lead there from 8pm to 11am in summer and 7pm to 11am in winter. Dogs listed as potentially dangerous breeds are kept out of them.
- Restaurants and pintxo bars
- Spain's 2023 animal welfare law leaves it to each bar and restaurant to decide, and a place that refuses dogs has to say so on a sign at the door. Terraces are the easy yes, and some pintxo bars in the Plaza Nueva let a dog inside. Say you're bringing a dog when you book. At the Ercilla the dog is welcome in the lounge but not the main restaurant, and at Tayko the dog comes to brunch but not into the Ola restaurant.
- Getting there
- Brittany Ferries sails Portsmouth to Bilbao, with 22 pet-friendly cabins and 12 kennels on the Galicia, at GBP 50 a pet each way. Foot passengers can't bring a dog, dogs can't stay in the car, and they're muzzled on the way to the cabin. Bilbao airport is 20 minutes from the centre, and no airline flies a pet dog into the UK in the cabin, so check the return leg first.
- Vets
- Hospital Veterinario Elkano, Calle Elkano 33 in Abando, is open around the clock 365 days a year, on +34 944 212 212, and it's a ten-minute walk from the Ercilla. AniCura Indautxu Hospital Veterinario in Erandio, towards the airport, also runs 24-hour emergencies, on +34 944 445 444.
- Best walks
- The Ría path from the Guggenheim past Puppy and Maman, over the Zubizuri footbridge and along the Campo Volantín quay to the Casco Viejo and the Plaza Nueva. The Parque de Doña Casilda, five minutes from the Ercilla and Catalonia Gran Vía, with its fenced dog area. The Artxanda funicular up to the viewpoint and the hill paths, and the Parque Etxebarria above the old town for a big lawn and the city view. Out of town, the Getxo seafront from Ereaga to the Arrigunaga cliffs, on the metro with a small dog or by car.
- When to go
- May, June, September and October. Bilbao is mild and rarely too hot for a dog, but it rains through the year, so pack a coat and a towel. From June to September the beaches only take dogs in the evening and early morning, and from October to May they're open at any hour, which makes autumn the best time for a coast day. Avoid the nine days of Aste Nagusia in the second half of August if your dog hates noise, as there are fireworks every night and the metro is closed to bigger dogs.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Bilbao
Is Bilbao dog friendly?+
Yes. The centre is flat, the Ría path runs past the Guggenheim to the old town, ten parks have fenced off-lead areas, and bars and restaurants let dogs in unless they post a sign saying no. The limits are the metro for big dogs until 15 October 2026 and the beaches, which only take dogs in the evening and early morning in summer.
Can I take my dog on the metro in Bilbao?+
A dog under 8 kg, yes, in your arms or in a carrier. From 15 October 2026 bigger dogs can ride too, muzzled and on a lead under 50 cm, away from the first and last carriages and off the escalators, and not at weekday rush hours, on Friday and Saturday nights or on match and fiesta days. Line 3, the trams and Euskotren already take dogs of any size on a lead.
Can dogs go into the Guggenheim Bilbao?+
No. The museum admits assistance dogs only. You can walk a dog right round the outside, past Puppy and Maman and along the Ría, so plan on one person going in while the other walks.
Which beaches near Bilbao allow dogs in summer?+
From June to September, Ereaga and Arrigunaga in Getxo and Arrietara, Atxabiribil and La Salvaje in Sopela from 8pm to 9.30am, Plentzia and the two Mundaka beaches from 9pm to 6am, Muriola in Barrika from 8pm to 6am, and Aritzatxu in Bermeo from 8pm to 11am. No Bizkaia beach takes dogs all day in summer. From October to May most of those, and Gorliz, Bakio and Laga, are open to dogs at any hour.
How much do Bilbao hotels charge for dogs?+
EUR 20 per dog per night at Hotel Ercilla, non-refundable, which covers a bed, bowls and treats in the room. EUR 25 a night at Tayko booking direct, Catalonia Gran Vía plus a EUR 200 deposit, and the two Sercotels. EUR 35 at ILUNION San Mamés and EUR 50 at The Artist and Hotel Carlton. Hesperia and Spirit Hotel Gran Bilbao don't publish a fee, so ask.
Which Bilbao hotels let dogs into breakfast or the restaurant?+
Hotel Tayko lets dogs come to brunch, but not into its Ola restaurant. Hotel Ercilla welcomes dogs in the lounge, where drinks and snacks are served, but not the main restaurant or the bar. The Artist allows dogs on The Gallery terrace. Spirit Hotel Gran Bilbao keeps dogs out of every shared space, the breakfast room included.
Can I leave my dog in the hotel room in Bilbao?+
It depends on the hotel. The Artist says yes, as long as reception has your phone number. Hotel Carlton says never, the dog stays with you at all times and the room is cleaned while you're out together. Spirit Hotel Gran Bilbao allows 30 minutes at most. The rest don't publish a rule, so ask.
Can dogs go in restaurants in Bilbao?+
Usually. Under Spain's 2023 animal welfare law each venue decides, and one that refuses dogs has to put a sign at the door. Terraces are the safe bet, and some pintxo bars in the Casco Viejo let a dog inside. Dogs never go into the kitchen or storage areas.
Where should I stay in Bilbao with a big dog?+
ILUNION San Mamés takes dogs of any size for EUR 35 a night with a welcome kit, and Hotel Tayko on the Ría sets no limit either. Hotel Ercilla publishes no weight limit, so ask them to confirm your dog when you book. Stay central, because until 15 October 2026 a dog over 8 kg can't use metro lines 1 and 2, and after that only off peak and never on San Mamés match days.
Can I take my dog on the ferry from the UK to Bilbao?+
Yes, with a car. Brittany Ferries' Portsmouth to Bilbao sailing has pet-friendly cabins and kennels, at GBP 50 per pet each way. Foot passengers can't bring pets, and dogs can't stay in the car or go into the public areas of the ship.
