Where can my dog actually go?

Amsterdam is a flat, walkable city where a dog rides the tram for nothing, walks off lead in the Vondelpark and gets waved into most cafe terraces, and where the big museums, the zoo and the canal cruise boats all say no. Seventeen hotels on our list take dogs, nearly all of them five-star and nearly all on or inside the canal ring, from the Kimpton De Witt by Dam Square to the Hoxton on the Herengracht, with two outliers out east on the Oosterpark and the docklands.

What separates them is not the fee, it's where the dog is allowed once you're through the door. Rosewood Amsterdam lets small and medium dogs into its indoor restaurants and every size onto the outdoor dining areas, which no other hotel in the city matches. Sofitel Legend The Grand has dogs in Library 'Or' and on the Garden Terrace. Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium takes them into the Lounge and Terrace. De L'Europe puts a name on it: Freddy's Bar welcomes dogs, its three restaurants don't. Kimpton De Witt and both Hoxtons have dogs in the lobby and shared spaces. The other way is just as clear. Pulitzer keeps dogs to the room and the garden, not the bar or Jansz. Pestana Riverside, the Marriott and Anantara Grand Krasnapolsky all keep dogs out of their restaurants and bars, and Anantara is the one hotel here that publishes a plain no at breakfast service.

Fees run from nothing at Kimpton De Witt and both Hoxtons, through EUR 15 a night plus a one-off EUR 121 cleaning charge at the W, EUR 35 a night at Pestana, EUR 45 a stay at the Marriott and the Andaz, EUR 50 a night at Anantara and the Pulitzer, EUR 65 a day at De L'Europe, EUR 75 a night at Mandarin Oriental, Pillows, TwentySeven and the Waldorf Astoria, up to EUR 100 a night at Sofitel Legend The Grand. Rosewood says a fee applies and doesn't publish it. Weight caps are the real filter in this city. Pillows Maurits at the Park stops at 6 kg, the Waldorf at 8 kg, Pestana at 15 kg, the Hoxtons at 18 kg, Apollo at 20 kg, Anantara at 25 kg, and the Pulitzer measures by height, no taller than 55 cm at the shoulder. For a big dog it's the Kimpton De Witt, which has no limit at all as long as the dog fits through the door and into the lift, then the Marriott at 35 kg and Mandarin Oriental at 34 kg.

Two traps. First, two of these hotels are not where the name suggests. Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Maurits at the Park is on the Oosterpark in Amsterdam Oost, a tram ride from the canal ring, and The Hoxton, Lloyd is out on the Eastern Docklands, not the Herengracht one. Second, the deposits. Hotel TwentySeven takes a EUR 1,000 general deposit at arrival, Apollo EUR 150 for the dog, Pestana EUR 100, and the Hoxtons may ask EUR 50. Several hotels, including Anantara, Pestana, Pillows and the Hoxtons, say the dog can't be left alone in the room, so plan the museums around that.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Leads and the parks
The city rule is a lead everywhere on the street and in parks, except in the marked off-lead areas, and dogs are banned from playgrounds, sports fields, school grounds and swimming spots even on a lead. The Vondelpark has off-lead areas and is the one most guests will use. The Westerpark, Rembrandtpark and Beatrixpark also have year-round off-lead sections, and the Amsterdamse Bos, south of the city, is the big one, with dogs loose on most paths but expected to stay on them for the wildlife. The city publishes an interactive map of every off-lead and no-dog zone, check it before letting the dog go.
Trams, metro, buses and ferries
GVB carries dogs free on the tram, metro and bus, on a short lead or in a bag on your lap, and they can't take a seat. No muzzle rule. The IJ ferries behind Centraal are free for everyone and nobody buys a ticket, so a dog on a lead walks on with you. On NS trains, including the 15-minute run from Schiphol to Centraal and the line out to Zandvoort, a small dog in a bag or on your lap goes free and a bigger dog needs a Dagkaart Hond, EUR 3.50 as an e-ticket.
Museums and the sights
The Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and ARTIS zoo admit registered assistance dogs only, and the Van Gogh Museum doesn't publish a pet rule, so assume the same. Stromma and Blue Boat canal cruises don't take dogs, though a Stromma skipper may allow one at their discretion if you ask before boarding. The Albert Cuyp market and the Waterlooplein flea market are open air and dogs walk through with you. Keukenhof, open mid-March to early May, takes one dog per person on a lead, outside the pavilions and restaurants.
Dogs at breakfast
Not one hotel on the list publishes a yes for its breakfast room. Anantara Grand Krasnapolsky is a clear no at breakfast service and offers in-room dining instead. Rosewood's indoor restaurant access for small and medium dogs and Sofitel Legend's Library 'Or' are your best chance of a shared morning coffee, otherwise ask by name when you book and expect to eat on a terrace.
Restaurants and cafes
Dutch food-safety rules let a cafe or restaurant admit dogs in the seating area as long as no food is prepared or stored there, and leave the decision to the owner. In practice most terraces and a good share of cafes say yes, restaurants with open kitchens or buffets say no. A water bowl by the door is the usual signal.
Fees and deposits
Free at Kimpton De Witt and both Hoxtons. EUR 15 a night plus EUR 121 cleaning at the W, EUR 35 a night at Pestana, EUR 45 a stay at the Marriott and the Andaz, EUR 50 a night at Anantara and the Pulitzer, EUR 50 a stay plus EUR 20 a night at Apollo, EUR 65 a day at De L'Europe, EUR 75 a night at Mandarin Oriental, Pillows, TwentySeven and the Waldorf, EUR 100 a night at Sofitel Legend The Grand. Rosewood doesn't publish its fee. Deposits: EUR 1,000 general at TwentySeven, EUR 150 at Apollo, EUR 100 at Pestana, EUR 50 possible at the Hoxtons.
Getting there
Schiphol is 15 minutes from Centraal by train. KLM carries a dog in the cabin up to 8 kg including the carrier on Amsterdam to Dublin, on KLM-operated flights only. No commercial flight into the UK carries a pet in the cabin, so from Britain the route is Stena Line from Harwich to Hook of Holland, with pet cabins and heated kennels, and foot passengers must book one of them. Eurostar doesn't take pets on its London trains. Zandvoort beach is 30 minutes from Centraal by train.
Vets
Spoedkliniek Medisch Centrum voor Dieren at Isolatorweg 45 in Amsterdam West is open 24 hours with a vet always on site, on 020 7400 600, and asks you to ring before you arrive. Evidensia Dierenziekenhuis Amsterdam at De Oude Molen 2 in Amstelveen is also 24 hours, on 020 308 0750.
Best walks
The canal ring itself, Prinsengracht to Herengracht and across the Jordaan bridges early before the bikes wake up. The Vondelpark for off-lead running, straight from Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium. The Oosterpark for Pillows Maurits at the Park and the Amstel banks for De L'Europe and Pestana. Out east, the Oostelijke Handelskade and the IJ waterfront from the Hoxton Lloyd, or the free ferry across to Noord and the NDSM wharf. For a proper day, the Amsterdamse Bos by tram, or the train to Zandvoort in the off season when the whole beach is open to dogs.
When to go
April to June and September for the terraces, the light and cool pavements, and it never gets hot enough here to trouble a dog. Keukenhof runs mid-March to early May and takes dogs on a lead. July and August are the crowds, not the heat, and the canal ring on a Saturday afternoon is a lot of bikes and feet for a small dog. From 1 October to 15 April the Zandvoort beach is open to dogs all day, in summer it's before nine and after seven only. Winter is grey and wet but the city is quieter, the parks are empty and every hotel on this list is open year-round.

Dog-friendly hotels in Amsterdam

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Amsterdam

Is Amsterdam dog friendly?+

Yes, on the street and in the parks, and less so at the ticket desks. Seventeen hotels on our list take dogs, GVB trams and metros carry them free, the Vondelpark has off-lead areas and most cafe terraces say yes. The Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, ARTIS and the main canal cruise companies all refuse pet dogs, so plan those for a morning the dog can be somewhere else.

Which Amsterdam hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

Rosewood Amsterdam lets small and medium dogs into its indoor restaurants and all dogs onto the outdoor dining areas and the bar. Sofitel Legend The Grand allows dogs in Library 'Or' and on the Garden Terrace. Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium takes them in the Lounge and Terrace, De L'Europe in Freddy's Bar, and Pillows Maurits at the Park in the Living lounge and Spring Cafe Brasserie for dogs under 6 kg. The Marriott, Anantara, Pestana and the Pulitzer keep dogs out of both.

Which Amsterdam hotels allow dogs at breakfast?+

None of them publishes a yes. Anantara Grand Krasnapolsky is a plain no at breakfast service. Rosewood and Sofitel Legend's Library 'Or' are the nearest thing, otherwise ask the hotel by name before you book rather than assuming.

How much do Amsterdam hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Kimpton De Witt and both Hoxtons, though the Hoxtons may take a EUR 50 deposit. EUR 15 a night plus EUR 121 cleaning at the W, EUR 35 a night at Pestana, EUR 45 a stay at the Marriott and the Andaz, EUR 50 a night at Anantara and the Pulitzer, EUR 65 a day at De L'Europe, EUR 75 a night at Mandarin Oriental, Pillows, TwentySeven and the Waldorf Astoria, and EUR 100 a night at Sofitel Legend The Grand.

Where should I stay in Amsterdam with a big dog?+

Kimpton De Witt, which sets no weight limit and charges nothing. After that the Amsterdam Marriott at 35 kg and Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium at 34 kg. The Andaz takes any size in its dedicated rooms. Avoid Pillows Maurits at the Park at 6 kg, the Waldorf at 8 kg and the Pulitzer's 55 cm shoulder-height rule.

Can I take my dog on the tram in Amsterdam?+

Yes, free. GVB takes dogs on trams, the metro and buses on a short lead or in a bag on your lap, and they can't sit on a seat. The IJ ferries are free for everyone. On NS trains a small dog on your lap goes free and a larger one needs a EUR 3.50 Dagkaart Hond.

Can dogs go on an Amsterdam canal cruise?+

Not on the big operators. Blue Boat Company refuses dogs, Stromma says no as a rule but a skipper may allow one at their discretion if you ask before departure. Assistance dogs are always allowed. Smaller private boat hires are the usual workaround.

Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room in Amsterdam?+

Often not. Anantara, Pestana and Pillows say no outright, the Hoxtons need you to tell reception, and guest reports say the Andaz expects you to stay with the dog. Since the museums, ARTIS and the cruise boats don't take dogs either, book a sitter for that half day.

Is there a beach near Amsterdam that allows dogs?+

Zandvoort, 30 minutes by train. From 1 October to 15 April dogs are allowed all day. From 15 April to 1 October they're banned between 9am and 7pm and allowed outside those hours. Those are Zandvoort's own rules for its beach, the neighbouring stretches set their own.
