The Amalfi Coast is steps, boats and buses, and a dog has to manage all three. Positano is a staircase with a beach at the bottom, Amalfi is flatter along the seafront but funnels every visitor through one square, and Ravello sits high up with the calmest, flattest pedestrian centre on the coast. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs, from a converted convent above Amalfi to a two-suite Belmond villa in Ravello, and most of them close from November to April.
What separates them isn't the fee, it's where the dog is allowed to be. Hotel Palazzo Murat in Positano lets dogs into its restaurant, which no other hotel on this list publishes. Hotel Poseidon, also in Positano, puts a bed, bowls, toys and Italian dog food in the room. At the other end, Caruso, A Belmond Hotel and Hotel Miramalfi keep dogs to the room only, out of the restaurant, the bar, the lobby and the pool, and Anantara Convento di Amalfi keeps them out of anywhere food is served and the pool area. Hotel Villa Cimbrone allows one dog in designated terrace rooms with blankets, bowls and a pet-sitting service, but not in the bar, the restaurant or the pool, and it can't be left alone in the room.
Fees run from nothing at Palazzo Murat, Poseidon, Caruso, Villa Margherita and Villa TreVille, through EUR 50 per pet per stay at Miramalfi and EUR 50 per pet per night at Anantara and Furore Grand Hotel, up to EUR 100 a stay at Villa Cimbrone. Weight caps are the real filter. Caruso takes dogs up to about 4 kg only, Miramalfi, Palazzo Avino and Villa Margherita say small dogs, Anantara and Villa Cimbrone cap at 25 kg. Palazzo Murat takes any size free, and Furore Grand Hotel takes any size for EUR 50 a night, so those two are the picks for a big dog.
Two traps. Torre Sponda on our list is the villa complex on Via Cristoforo Colombo, which takes dogs on request. The separate three-star Torre Sponda Hotel does not. And the SITA coast buses admit only small dogs, muzzled and on a lead, so a bigger dog gets around by ferry or on foot.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Buses and ferries
- SITA Sud runs the coast road buses and admits small dogs only, muzzled and on a lead. Small animals ride free and a larger dog needs a passenger ticket, and the driver can refuse a dog when the bus is packed, which in summer is most of the time. The ferries are the better bet. Travelmar links Salerno, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Amalfi and Positano and takes dogs on a paid pet fare, muzzled and on a lead. NLG runs Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Positano and Amalfi and lets dogs inside on a lead with a muzzle, and may ask for the vaccination papers.
- Getting there
- Naples Capodichino is the airport, about 90 minutes from Positano by car. The main UK and Ireland carriers into Naples don't take dogs in the cabin, so most people route through a European hub or drive up from further south. From Naples the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (EAV) takes dogs of any size on a lead and muzzled, or small dogs in a carrier up to 70 by 30 by 50 cm, with a passenger fare for a medium or large dog and a ban on weekdays between 7am and 9am.
- Villa Rufolo and the Ravello gardens
- Villa Rufolo admits dogs up to 30 cm at the shoulder and 20 kg, on a short fixed lead with a muzzle, gardens only, and staff can ask to see your poo bags. Open daily 9am to 8pm, EUR 8. Villa Cimbrone's gardens publish no rule, so ring ahead. The Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Nocelle is a free public trail and a dog walks it on a lead.
- Beaches
- There's no coast-wide rule. Each comune and each lido sets its own, and most of the sand at Positano, Amalfi and Maiori is lido concessions in summer. Ask the lido before you pay for loungers. Villa TreVille has its own rock beach and Torre Sponda a private beach, which sidesteps the question.
- Dogs at breakfast and dinner
- Palazzo Murat is the only yes for the restaurant. Anantara, Caruso and Miramalfi are a clear no at breakfast. Villa Cimbrone and Villa Margherita keep dogs out of the restaurant and bar. Poseidon, Furore Grand, Palazzo Avino and Villa TreVille don't publish a rule, so ask by name when you book.
- Weight limits and two dogs
- Caruso caps at about 4 kg, Miramalfi, Palazzo Avino and Villa Margherita take small dogs, Anantara and Villa Cimbrone cap at 25 kg. Palazzo Murat and Furore Grand take any size. Anantara, Caruso and Miramalfi take two dogs. Poseidon and Villa Cimbrone take one.
- Seasonal closures and heat
- Most of these hotels close from roughly November to April. Poseidon and Villa Cimbrone close November to mid-April, Miramalfi mid-April to early November, Palazzo Avino April to end of October. July and August are hot, the steps in Positano are in full sun and the buses are rammed, so walk early and late.
- Vets
- Studio Cardamone at Via Castello 1 in Maiori (089 851153) is the vet actually on the coast. For out-of-hours cover, Centro Medico Veterinario Villani in Nocera Superiore (081 934522) lists night, holiday and 24-hour on-call service, about 40 minutes over the pass by car.
- Best walks
- The Path of the Gods from Bomerano in Agerola to Nocelle above Positano, the Sentiero degli Innamorati from Spiaggia Grande along to Fornillo in Positano, the seafront from Amalfi round the headland to Atrani's small square and beach, the Valle delle Ferriere up from Amalfi into the shade, and Villa Rufolo's gardens in Ravello for a dog under 20 kg.
- When to go
- Late April to June and September to October. The hotels are open, the sea is warm by June, the ferries are running and the steps are bearable. July and August bring heat, full buses that may refuse a dog, and lidos wall to wall. From November to April most of these hotels are shut and the ferries thin out, so the coast is quiet but hard to reach.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Amalfi Coast
Is the Amalfi Coast dog friendly?+
Yes, with legwork. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs, the ferries take them on a lead and muzzle, and Villa Rufolo and the Path of the Gods let a dog in. The catches are the SITA buses, which admit small dogs only, the steps, which are hard on an older dog, and the hotels, most of which keep dogs in the room and out of the restaurant.
Which Amalfi Coast hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+
Hotel Palazzo Murat in Positano. It's the only one on our list with a published yes. Anantara Convento di Amalfi, Caruso, Miramalfi, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Margherita all keep dogs out of the restaurant and bar. The rest don't publish a rule.
How much do Amalfi Coast hotels charge for dogs?+
Nothing at Palazzo Murat, Poseidon, Caruso, Villa Margherita and Villa TreVille, and generally nothing at Palazzo Avino if you flag the dog when booking. EUR 50 per pet per stay at Miramalfi. EUR 50 per pet per night at Anantara and Furore Grand Hotel. EUR 100 a stay at Villa Cimbrone. Torre Sponda says charges may apply.
Where should I stay on the Amalfi Coast with a big dog?+
Hotel Palazzo Murat in Positano takes any size free and lets the dog into the restaurant. Furore Grand Hotel takes any size for EUR 50 a night with bowls in the room. Anantara and Villa Cimbrone cap at 25 kg. Avoid Caruso, which caps at about 4 kg.
Can I take my dog on the Amalfi Coast bus?+
Only a small one. SITA Sud's conditions admit small dogs and cats muzzled and on a lead, and the driver can refuse when the bus is full. For a medium or large dog use the Travelmar or NLG ferries, which take dogs on a lead and muzzle for a small fare.
Can I take my dog on the ferry to Positano or Amalfi?+
Yes. Travelmar from Salerno and NLG from Naples and Sorrento both take dogs muzzled and on a lead, with a pet fare. NLG asks for a vet certificate and rabies vaccination proof, so carry the passport.
Are dogs allowed in Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone?+
Villa Rufolo yes, for dogs up to 30 cm at the shoulder and 20 kg, on a short lead with a muzzle, gardens only. Villa Cimbrone's gardens don't publish a rule, so ring ahead. The Amalfi Duomo and the Cloister of Paradise publish no rule for dogs, so ask at the ticket desk before you climb the steps.
Are dogs allowed on Amalfi Coast beaches?+
There's no single rule. Each comune and each lido decides, and in summer most of the sand at Positano, Amalfi and Maiori is lido concessions that set their own policy. Ask before you pay. Villa TreVille and Torre Sponda have private beaches, which is the easy answer.
Which Amalfi Coast hotels put out a welcome pack for dogs?+
Hotel Poseidon in Positano provides a bed, bowls, toys and Italian dog food. Furore Grand Hotel puts food and water bowls in the room. Villa Cimbrone provides blankets, bowls and pet-sitting. Palazzo Avino says bowls may be available. The rest publish nothing.
