The Algarve is easy country for a dog for eight months of the year and awkward for four. Outside the bathing season the sand is open, the clifftop paths between Albufeira's coves run for miles, and the Ria Formosa boardwalks at Quinta do Lago and the pine tracks behind Praia Verde are flat, shaded and quiet. From June to the end of September the supervised beaches close to dogs, and on the eastern half of the coast, from Vilamoura to Vila Real de Santo António, that closure covers the classified beaches whether or not a lifeguard is on duty. Twelve hotels on our list take dogs, spread from Sagres at the western tip to Altura near the Spanish border, so where you stay decides what your dog gets to do.
What separates them is where the dog is allowed to be, and most of the big names publish very little. The clearest policy on the list is Viceroy at Ombria, up in the Loulé hills, where dogs are welcome in the lobby, in the gardens and at the poolside, and kept out of the spa, the indoor pool, the gym, the kids' club, the bars and the restaurants. Conrad Algarve puts a bed, bowls, a toy and a pet menu in the room and takes two dogs up to about 35 kg, though it does not say where they can go beyond the room. Octant Praia Verde and Octant Vila Monte both set out a full kit, bed, towel, bowls, bags and a toy, and both give the dog the run of the gardens. Hotel Quinta do Lago is the plain no of the list, dogs only by special arrangement and not in any public area, including the pools. Martinhal Sagres takes dogs only in a set of fenced village houses, never in the hotel rooms, which suits a dog that likes a garden of its own.
Fees run from EUR 15 a night plus a deposit at the Algarve Marriott Salgados, through EUR 30 a night at the Pousada Palácio de Estói and EUR 50 a night or a day at Viceroy, Conrad, Victoria Golf and Octant Vila Monte, up to EUR 130 a stay at W Algarve and W Residences. Viceroy waives the fee after a seventh night. Weight caps bite hard here. Marriott Salgados, Kimpton Atlântico and Octant Vila Monte stop at 10 kg, W Algarve, W Residences and the Pousada at 15 kg, Victoria Golf at 25 kg and Viceroy at 30 kg. Conrad Algarve's 35 kg makes it the pick for a big dog, and Octant Praia Verde publishes no cap at all, so ask.
Two things to watch when you book. The Algarve is a region, not a town, and the hotels here sit up to two hours apart by car, so a Sagres booking is not a Faro booking. And Albufeira runs a longer bathing season than the rest of the coast, mid May to mid October, so the three Albufeira hotels lose their beaches for a month longer at each end than Sagres or Praia Verde do.

Where Daisy would book
01Viceroy at Ombria AlgarveThe clearest access story in the Algarve: dogs in the lobby, the gardens and at the poolside, on a lead, and a VIPets kit with a bed, bowls, bottled water, snacks and a toy to take home. Not in the spa, indoor pool, gym, bars or restaurants, and not left alone in the room. EUR 50 a day, free after the seventh night, one dog up to 30 kg per room or two per suite.
EUR 50 · max 30 kg
02Conrad AlgarveThe big-dog pick, taking two dogs up to about 35 kg, with a bed, pillows, bowls, a toy and a pet menu in the room and the Quinta do Lago boardwalks on the doorstep. Where the dog can go beyond the room isn't published, so ask when you book. EUR 50 per pet per day.
EUR 50 · max 35 kg
03Octant Praia VerdeA full Octant kit in the room, bed, blanket, towel, bags, a toy and bowls, dogs in the gardens, and a boardwalk from the pines straight to Praia Verde. No weight cap is published and the fee is a per-night supplement confirmed at booking. Some sea-view rooms don't take pets.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Beaches in summer
- Supervised, concessioned beaches close to dogs for the bathing season, 1 June to 30 September on most of the coast and 15 May to 15 October in Albufeira. From Vilamoura east to Vila Real de Santo António the coastal plan closes the classified beaches to animals for the season whatever their status. Unsupervised sand is open all year unless a sign says otherwise, and the whole coast reopens in October. Fines run EUR 55 to EUR 550.
- Beaches with a yes
- The western beaches around Sagres and Vila do Bispo, including Praia do Barranco, Praia da Figueira, Praia do Telheiro and Praia das Furnas, are the ones that keep appearing on dog-beach lists. Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Culatra off Faro and Olhão are listed year-round. Nearer Albufeira, Praia da Baleeira and Praia Grande de Pêra are the named ones. Check the board at the entrance, the rule is set beach by beach.
- Trains
- CP's regional line runs Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António with stops at Albufeira-Ferreiras, Faro, Olhão, Fuseta and Tavira. A dog in a carrier travels free. A dog on a short lead with a muzzle needs a half-fare ticket on regional trains, a full-fare ticket on Intercidades and Alfa Pendular, and its vaccination record and microchip number at the ticket desk. Listed breeds aren't carried.
- Buses and ferries
- Vamus Algarve, the regional bus operator, doesn't publish a pet rule, and Portuguese law lets each bus company set its own limits and refuse animals at peak times, so expect a carrier and ask the driver. The ferries out to Culatra, Armona and Ilha Deserta don't publish a rule either. Ring ahead rather than turn up.
- Sights
- Ponta da Piedade at Lagos and Cabo de São Vicente at Sagres are open headlands and a dog walks them with you. Faro's walled old town is a public street. Shared Benagil cave boat tours generally refuse dogs, so a private charter is the only way in. Zoomarine, Silves Castle and the Sagres fortress don't publish a dog rule that we could find, so ring before you drive.
- Restaurants
- A 2018 change in the law leaves it to each restaurant whether dogs come inside, as long as they stay clear of the kitchen. In practice the terrace is the norm and indoors is still rare, so pick a table outside and ask. Terraces are open most of the year here, which is the point of the place.
- Weight limits and fees
- 10 kg at Marriott Salgados, Kimpton Atlântico and Octant Vila Monte. 15 kg at W Algarve, W Residences and the Pousada Palácio de Estói. 25 kg at Victoria Golf, 30 kg at Viceroy, 35 kg at Conrad. Fees from EUR 15 a night at the Marriott to EUR 130 a stay at the two W properties. Conrad and Viceroy suites take two dogs, most of the rest take one.
- Getting there and heat
- Faro is the airport, and the airport itself says only that most airlines carry small pets in cabin, so check the carrier. No dog flies in cabin into the UK, so a UK return means cargo or a ferry. Flights to Dublin carry dogs in cabin with several airlines. July and August run past 30 degrees inland and the pavements in Albufeira burn paws by midday, so walk early and late.
- Best walks
- The Quinta do Lago boardwalk and the Ludo trails through the Ria Formosa pines and lagoons, the clifftop path between São Rafael, Praia da Coelha and Castelo beach west of Albufeira, the lagoon edge at Salgados, the pine boardwalk from Octant Praia Verde down to the sand and on along the eastern beaches, the Fonte Benémola river trail near Ombria, the Milreu ruins walk from Estói, and the Sagres peninsula paths out to Praia do Beliche and Cabo de São Vicente.
- When to go
- October to May is the dog's Algarve. The beaches reopen to dogs in October on most of the coast, mid October in Albufeira, and stay open until the end of May, with empty sand and mild walking weather through the winter. June to September the supervised beaches shut to dogs, Albufeira's from mid May, and the heat inland and the crowds on the coast make midday walking miserable. If summer is the only option, stay west at Sagres or east at Praia Verde where the season is shorter and the unsupervised coves are nearer.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Algarve
Is the Algarve dog friendly?+
Yes, with a season attached. Twelve hotels on our list take dogs, from Sagres to Altura, the Ria Formosa boardwalks and the western cliff paths are open all year, and terraces are the restaurant norm. From June to September the supervised beaches close to dogs, so come in the other eight months if the beach is the point.
Can dogs go on Algarve beaches in summer?+
Not on supervised, concessioned beaches during the bathing season, which is 1 June to 30 September on most of the coast and 15 May to 15 October in Albufeira. East of Vilamoura the closure covers all classified beaches. Unsupervised beaches are open unless signed, and the Sagres and Vila do Bispo coves and the Ria Formosa islands are the ones listed as dog beaches.
Which Algarve hotels let dogs to the pool or into the restaurant?+
Viceroy at Ombria allows dogs at the poolside, in the lobby and in the gardens, but not in the bars or restaurants. Hotel Quinta do Lago keeps dogs out of every public area including the pools. Every other hotel on the list, Conrad, the W, the Kimpton, Marriott Salgados and Victoria Golf among them, publishes no rule for the restaurant, bar or pool, so ask by name when you book.
How much do Algarve hotels charge for dogs?+
EUR 15 a night plus a refundable deposit at the Algarve Marriott Salgados. EUR 30 a night at the Pousada Palácio de Estói. EUR 50 a night or a day at Conrad Algarve, Viceroy at Ombria, Victoria Golf and Octant Vila Monte, with Viceroy waiving it after seven nights. EUR 130 a stay at W Algarve and W Residences. Kimpton, Octant Praia Verde, Martinhal and Hotel Quinta do Lago confirm the fee at booking.
Where should I stay in the Algarve with a big dog?+
Conrad Algarve at Quinta do Lago takes dogs up to about 35 kg, and two of them. Viceroy at Ombria caps at 30 kg and Victoria Golf at 25 kg. Octant Praia Verde publishes no cap, so ask. Avoid the 10 kg hotels, Marriott Salgados, Kimpton Atlântico and Octant Vila Monte, and the 15 kg W properties.
Which Algarve hotels give a welcome pack for dogs?+
Viceroy at Ombria's VIPets kit has a bed, bowls, bottled water, snacks and a toy to keep. Conrad Algarve adds a pet menu to its bed, bowls and toy. Octant Praia Verde and Octant Vila Monte both set out a bed, towel, bowls, bags and a toy, with Vila Monte's EUR 50 fee covering the pack. The Pousada Palácio de Estói puts out snacks, a bed and a feeder. W Algarve provides bowls, beds and treats.
Can I take my dog on the train along the Algarve?+
Yes. CP's regional trains run Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António. A dog in a carrier goes free, a dog on a short lead with a muzzle pays half fare on the regional service and needs its vaccination record and chip number when you buy the ticket. Listed dangerous breeds aren't carried.
Can dogs fly to Faro in the cabin?+
From Ireland, yes with several airlines, and Faro Airport says most carriers take small pets in cabin. Into the UK, no dog flies in cabin on any airline, so a UK return means the dog goes as cargo or you drive and sail. Check the flights app for the current carrier list.
Which part of the Algarve is best with a dog?+
Quinta do Lago for the boardwalks and the Conrad if you want lagoon walks year-round. Sagres and the west if you want beaches in summer, since the unsupervised coves cluster there. Praia Verde in the east for quiet pines and a short season. Albufeira has the longest beach closure, mid May to mid October, so it's the weakest summer base with a dog.
