Crete with Your Dog: The Ultimate Pet-Friendly Greek Island Experience

By Crazy Daisy Travels

dog friendly Crete

When planning our Greek island adventure with Daisy, Crete wasn’t initially on our radar. But after three incredible days exploring this surprisingly dog-loving destination, I can confidently say it’s become our new favorite Mediterranean escape for luxury-seeking dog parents.

Arrival Reality Check: Crete is Bigger Than You Think

Here’s what nobody tells you about Crete: it’s massive. With two main airports (Chania and Heraklion), this isn’t your typical small Greek island hop. We flew into Heraklion, and our resort was over two hours away. Initially this caused some airport panic when the hotel transportation I’d arranged never materialized.

The local rental companies across from the airport were genuinely excited to meet Daisy, treating her like a VIP guest rather than a travel inconvenience. Yes, they held an additional €600 on my card for pet travel, but the freedom to explore at our own pace proved invaluable. What seemed like a travel hiccup turned into the best decision we made.

Book your car rental online rather than on the day if you are traveling in the summer as all the airport car rentals were sold out.

Day One: Chania Old Port Where History Meets Dog-Friendly Charm

Getting There and Parking

Our Saturday morning started with ambitious plans to walk the hour from our hotel to Chania or catch the bus along the way. Reality check: the May heat was already intense by mid-morning, the buses were packed like sardines, and we encountered several roaming local dogs that required careful navigation with Daisy.

Taking our rental car turned a potentially stressful morning into a pleasant 15-20 minute drive. Parking in Chania’s Old Port requires strategy. Arrive early to snag a spot in the main car parks. We circled a very full lot before finding space on the west side of the port.

The Old Port Experience

Chania’s U-shaped harbor is restaurant heaven. You literally cannot walk more than a few steps without finding somewhere to eat or drink. What struck us immediately were the numerous signs saying “We won’t hassle you” outside establishments, clearly addressing past issues with aggressive solicitation.

The entire port area is genuinely pet-friendly in the most natural way. I never once had to ask if Daisy could come into a restaurant. Fresh water bowls appeared automatically, and staff genuinely seemed delighted to meet her.

We found a lovely shaded coffee shop for lunch where I had a delicious mozzarella sandwich (which Daisy helped finish, naturally). The outdoor seating was perfect, and the relaxed atmosphere made it clear that dogs aren’t just tolerated here. They’re welcomed as part of the experience.

Exploring the Venetian Ruins

The historical ruins along the waterfront provide endless Instagram opportunities, but the midday heat meant Daisy spent this portion of our walk in her travel backpack. The Venetian fortifications and harbor walls create a dramatic backdrop for photos, and the elevated walkways offer stunning views across the turquoise water.

The contrast between ancient stone and brilliant blue water is magical. Plan for golden hour if possible.

Food Reality Check

After a full day of exploration, we returned to our wellness-focused resort where the dinner menu was decidedly clean. Think no fries, lots of superfoods, and portions designed for Instagram rather than satisfying post-adventure appetites. Enter WOLT, Greece’s fantastic delivery app, which saved us with proper comfort food delivered directly to our luxury suite.

Booking Through the Hotel

Our concierge arranged everything with the local boat rental company, Notos Mare. They presented several vendor options and, knowing the previous day’s waters had been rough, recommended the calmest route given our first-time boat rental status and four-legged crew member.

The booking happened within 24 hours, with the hotel handling all arrangements with Notos Mare. The only question they asked was whether we’d be bringing Daisy, and their main advice was refreshingly honest: “Don’t be surprised if she gets seasick. Most first-time dogs do.”

The Morning Departure

A 15-20 minute drive from our hotel (again, rental car proving essential) brought us to the harbor. The comprehensive boat orientation covered everything: how to drive, reverse, anchor, safety protocols, and where all documents were stored in case of coast guard inspections.

The game-changer was their custom app. Scan a QR code for your planned route and get real-time information about points of interest, from sea caves to clifftop hotels, plus crucial warnings about shallow waters. Cell coverage remained strong throughout our journey, so navigation never felt isolating.

On the Water with Daisy

Daisy proved to be a natural sailor. Her baby shark life vest was both adorable and reassuring, and after a brief “I’m the captain now” phase, she settled into pure contentment. The boat’s removable canopy provided essential shade, and having towels on the floor gave her a comfortable spot to relax.

At our final cove destination, Daisy had her first real swimming experience. With her life vest secured and leash attached, she followed me into the surprisingly cool water. While we only stayed in the water for about 2 minutes, watching her natural swimming instincts kick in was one of those magical travel moments you never forget.

The Snorkeling Bonus

While Daisy supervised from the boat, I managed some solo snorkeling around the cove. The water clarity was incredible, and having her as my boat-watching companion made the whole experience feel safer and more enjoyable than typical solo adventures.

Extending the Adventure

Halfway through our half-day rental, I WhatsApped the company asking to keep the boat for the full day. We were having too good a time, and Daisy was so relaxed and happy that cutting the experience short felt criminal. They agreed immediately. No hassle, just pure Greek hospitality.

€160 for the full day plus €20 for fuel. For a private boat experience with your dog, this felt like incredible value.

The Challenging Return

The wind picked up significantly by late afternoon, making our return journey much rougher. Water was splashing everywhere, so we hugged the coastline all the way back. Daisy remained unfazed, but it reinforced the importance of checking weather conditions before heading out.

We returned around 4:30-5:00 PM, exhausted but exhilarated. The boat rental staff even gifted us a traditional Cretan honey dessert. The kind of thoughtful touch that makes Greek hospitality legendary.

Where We Stayed: When Luxury Meets Pet Paradise

From the moment we arrived at 5 PM on Friday, this resort redefined what pet-friendly luxury could look like. Daisy received the kind of welcome typically reserved for celebrity guests. While I got champagne and cold towels, she got fresh water and genuine excitement from every staff member.

The check-in process eliminated every typical travel stress: no standing at counters, just comfortable seating while staff handled paperwork. They even had a special behavioral agreement for Daisy to “sign” (which she passed with flying colors).

The Suite Decision

Choosing between Instagram-worthy water views and practical pet comfort, we opted for the ground-floor suite with extensive outdoor space and a private plunge pool. This proved perfect for Daisy’s needs: more private outdoor area, no stairs to navigate, and that plunge pool became her favorite cooling station.

The beach access was genuinely dog-friendly, complete with extendable lead freedom and automatic water station service. After our boat adventure, collapsing on luxury beach chairs while Daisy played in the shallows felt like the perfect end to perfect days.

Why Crete Works for Dog Travel

Unlike destinations where dogs are merely tolerated, Crete’s locals genuinely love meeting traveling pups. From car rental enthusiasm to restaurant water bowls appearing without asking, the hospitality feels natural rather than performative.

The combination of reliable car rentals, genuine pet-friendly accommodations, and activity providers who accommodate dogs creates an environment where you’re not constantly problem-solving your pet’s inclusion.

The boat rental experience alone makes Crete worth visiting. Finding activity providers who not only allow but genuinely welcome dogs on adventures like this is rare in luxury travel.

Our May timing offered perfect conditions: warm enough for water activities, cool enough for comfortable exploration, and busy enough for social opportunities without overwhelming crowds.

Planning Your Own Crete Adventure

Rent a car upon arrival rather than booking online if not in peak season. Budget extra for pet deposits and fees. Pack towels for both beach and boat adventures. Download WOLT for food delivery backup. Plan accommodation for weather flexibility.

Check marine conditions before booking boat activities. May offers ideal temperatures for both humans and dogs. Have indoor backup plans for peak heat.

What we’d do differently: Book the boat for a full day from the start. Pack more substantial snacks for boat adventures. Research more traditional tavernas outside the wellness resort bubble. Plan for multiple boat experiences (we’re already planning our return!).

This trip proved that luxury travel and dog-friendly adventures aren’t mutually exclusive. When done right, they enhance each other. Crete offers that rare combination of sophisticated amenities and genuine pet hospitality that makes every moment feel special for both you and your four-legged family member.

Ready to start planning your own Cretan adventure with your favorite travel companion? The island’s blend of luxury, authenticity, and surprising pet-friendliness makes it an ideal destination for discerning dog parents who refuse to compromise on either comfort or inclusion.

@crazydaisytravels

They said traveling with a dog means giving up luxury. We couldn’t disagree more. Daisy and I just stayed at Domes Noruz Chania in Crete…an adults-only, five-star resort that didn’t just allow dogs… they welcomed her like a guest. No “dog wing,” no strange smells, no corner room. Just a stunning suite with a private pool, sea views, and the kind of service you don’t forget. There’s this idea that if you travel with your dog, you have to settle. Basic hotels. Limited options. But that’s not how we do things. Daisy is part of the adventure…not a reason to compromise. We wandered the old streets of Chania, had sunset cocktails (Daisy prefers ice cubes), and came home to one of the most peaceful and beautiful places we’ve stayed in. It didn’t feel like a “dog-friendly hotel.” It just felt like a great hotel that happens to love dogs too. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book the trip and bring your dog with you…this is it. They deserve more than a kennel. You deserve more than a standard room. You can absolutely have both. #crazydaisytravels #domesnoruz #dogfriendlygreece #travelwithyourdog #shihtzutravels #dogmomlife #luxurydogfriendly #dogfriendlyresort #cretewithdogs #shihtzulife #petfriendlyhotels #dogtravelguide #luxurytravelwithpets #chania #chaniaoruz
